Edgartown
June 30, 2005

It’s so nice to be home! We had a wonderful vacation in Colorado, full of fun and excitement, but it’s always nice to return home to our regular lives. The Rocky Mountains were incredibly beautiful, but I somehow seemed to feel more claustrophobic in Durango than I do on the Vineyard. As was pointed out in Jaws, “It’s only an island if you look at it from the water.” In Colorado, no matter what we did, we couldn’t ignore the fact that we were completely surrounded by mountains.

The Island has its own ways about it too. No matter how busy it gets, it always has a small-town feel, where people help each other out. There is something special about returning home after a vacation to lots of messages on your answering machine and half of them are reporting that your cat is down in Atwood Circle again. Thank you to all who called and helped track Wagger down again. He is once again home, safe and sound, and, apparently, against his will. Keep the calls coming. I’m sure he’ll be heading out again soon, once he has fattened up a little more and rested from the last excursion!

Summer has definitely arrived. Traffic is heavy. Parking is limited. The beaches are crowded. Tempers are flaring. And in what has become an annual event, it looks like Norton Point Beach will soon be closed to vehicle traffic, possibly by the time this goes to print, due to two Piping Plover nests. So expect to be turned away if you head to the beach with plans to four-wheel it over the warm sands and expect extra long lines at the Chappy Ferry. Bring a good book and a sense of humor wherever you go. It helps. Traffic and delays are just part of the price we pay for being able to spend our time on this Island paradise.

Condolences go out to John, Julie, and Caroline Moffett for the loss of John’s father, David. Also, thoughts are with the family and friends of Ivy Marcella following her death in a swimming accident last week, and the family of long-time Edgartown resident Stuart Brown, for their recent loss. Know that people are thinking of you during these difficult times.

Thankfully, more tragedy was averted last week when a Cessna crashed while trying to land at the Katama Airfield. The firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and lifeguards, as well as the airfield managers and staff, did a great job containing the crash and helping the victims. Given the circumstances of the crash, things could have been much worse.

With the Fourth of July on Monday, expect a busy weekend ahead, probably extending well into next week. Be sure to check the Times Calendar section for news about the events and celebrations for Monday. And, of course, don’t forget the annual parade and fireworks display in Edgartown. Rumor has it that, as the fireworks are pretty much a losing proposition financially speaking, this may be the last year for them.

May you all have a wonderful week ahead and Happy Fourth of July! I’m sure many of you will be attending parties and celebrations over the holiday weekend, so be sure to send me your news.
