A taste of the best

It’s the event that makes all those cold winter months of aerobics classes and South Beach Diet dinners worth it. Food lovers and chefs alike have been looking forward for weeks to this evening’s A Taste of the Vineyard Gourmet Stroll, the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust’s annual summer-kick-off gourmet feast. 2005 marks the 20th anniversary of the yearly gala, which offers a chance to socialize and meet up with friends while sampling some of the very best food and drink the Island has to offer. It all takes place under a vast white tent on the Old Whaling Church lawn.

The stroll showcases extraordinary cuisine and libations from the Island’s finest caterers, restaurateurs, and beverage purveyors. Offerings traditionally range from delectable appetizers to small samples of soups and main courses, and there is always an array of sinful desserts. This year there will be more than 75 participants, all of whom have picked the most appealing items from their menus to delight guests.

After sampling all those delicacies, it will be time for a little exercise, and what better way to top off a wonderful dinner than a few spins on the dance floor. Jerry Bennett and his popular Sultans of Swing will be on hand to entertain.

All proceeds from the gala evening will benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust, which has purchased and restored numerous historic landmark buildings on the Island, among them the Old Whaling Church, the Flying Horses, and the Grange Hall in West Tisbury.

Space is very limited for tonight’s popular event, but a few tickets remain.

A Taste of the Vineyard Gourmet Stroll, Thursday, June 16, 6:30 pm, Old Whaling Church lawn, Edgartown. $125. For information and tickets call 508-627-4440.
