Oak Bluffs
June 30, 2005

By Megan Alley - 508-693-0850 - meganislandmegan@verizon.net

If there is any doubt that summer is actually here, just go up Vineyard Ave. and view what my grandkids call Mrs. Rose’s roses. The roses in front of Betty Rose’s house would make a perfect painting. And over on Wing Rd., another Mrs. Rose has what could be an old fashioned English Garden with its many varieties of flowers of many colors. This summer picture is the result of Alice Rose’s green thumb. Thank you both for sharing this beauty with all passers-by.

Perhaps it may seem too early to speak about the annual Oak Bluffs Firemen’s Civic Association Fireworks show that will take place on Aug.19 this year. But in preparation for this they have already begun to sell tee-shirts and other items of clothing downtown on Circuit Ave. every Friday and Saturday evenings to raise money for this show and also for the scholarships they give out each year to a Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School student. So go look at what they are offering and you will be helping out a good cause also.

On Friday night, the Sunshine Committee of the Oak Bluffs School held a farewell party at the Grange Hall for the three faculty members who are retiring from the school at the end of this academic year. They are the school nurse Nancy Meekins, guidance counselor Bill Jones and math teacher Ray Leighton. These three people have a total of over 90 years service to the school.

The hall was overflowing with friends, co-workers, family and great affection. The entertainment was terrific and there was toasting and roasting to each one with song and dance and a great deal of tongue-in-cheek. The hall was soon resounding with laughter and also some very serious moments. It is quite obvious that these people will be greatly missed.

Art From The Heart for UNICEF is a one day art and artisans sale that will help raise much needed funds to assist children who were effected by the Tsunami in Southeast Asia .It will take place on Sat., July 9 from 10:00-4:00 at St. Andrew’s Church Parish Hall in Edgartown.

The Oak Bluffs School Summer Book Swap is off to a good start. There are tables in the school lobby with donated books that can be borrowed, kept or recycled. Students or families may come in during the summer, Monday through Friday until 12 noon and select one or two books. It is hoped that donations will continue over the summer to make this program work.

And one more reminder (or perhaps a gentle? nudge) — please check to see if you child has any books or materials that belong at the school. Also lunch bills must be paid. Report cards will only be mailed to students who have paid all outstanding debts.

Students are now out of school for the summer break, so please be extra careful driving as their enthusiasm sometimes carries them off the sidewalks into the streets. We want to keep everyone safe.

We send birthday smiles to Madeline Alley on July 7 and to Anthony "Tubby" Rebello and Rahmale Hopkins on July 3.

After three weeks in Perth in Western Australia with their new baby sister Paige and her mother Debra Alley, while their dad Dion Alley was in South Korea, Sam and Benjamin Alley spent a week here with their grandparents, Dennis and Megan Alley. They enjoyed "hanging out" with their cousins, Marques, Matt, and Nicholas Rivers, Talia Rogers, and Jeremy Alley Tarter. They also managed to coerce their aunts Kati and Mary Alley into allowing numerous sleepovers.

Marie Hearn of West Newton came to help her mother Ann Hearn of Woodside Villiage celebrate her birthday which was on June 5.

I received a very nice e-mail from Lisa Schultheis who is now from Maryland but used to live on the Vineyard .Her sister, the former Darlene Phillips, moved to the Vineyard in 1979 but now resides in Colorado. Lisa is coming back to the Vineyard this August with her husband and son and is looking forward to seeing the Island again as her last visit was10 years ago. She says she goes on-line to read the column and keep up with what is going on here.

Enjoy your week and send your news along.
