Shorts July 14, 2005 Three-parish event hosts Bishop Harris The Island’s three Episcopal parishes will join together this Sunday, July 17, at 5 pm to host Bishop Barbara Harris as preacher at a special Evensong celebration. The event will be held at Trinity Episcopal Chapel across from the Steamship Authority in Oak Bluffs. The choirs and music directors of St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown, Grace Church in Vineyard Haven, and Trinity Chapel are merging to provide music for the service. All are welcome to attend. The tri-parish service is being coordinated by Grace Church’s Burgess committee, named for the late Bishop John Burgess, which works to promote understanding among all races. Donate for the animals The MSPCA is looking for donations of all sorts from Island businesses for its annual Silent Auction to raise funds for the animals at the shelter. The event, set to take place August 27, has become both a fun and successful fundraiser. The MSPCA needs your help and kindness to make this year’s event as successful as those in years past. If you are a business owner and would like to donate a tax-deductible item or service, call the MSPCA at 508-627-8662. Vern talks about birds This Sunday, The Friends of the West Tisbury Library will present an evening with bird expert E. Vernon Laux. His presentation, “Bird Tails-Island Oddities: Mostly from Near, Some from Afar,” is the first of two summer book talks to be held at the Grange. Mr. Laux writes a weekly column for The Times as well as contributing frequently to other publications, including the New York Times. Copies of Mr. Laux’s book, “Bird News: Vagrants and Visitors on a Peculiar Island,” will be available for purchase and signing. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Friends of West Tisbury Library Building Fund. “Bird Tales-Island Oddities,” at the Grange Hall, State Rd., West Tisbury, Sunday, July 17, 7 pm, tickets $20, call 508-693-3366.
