Artistic unions


Dragonfly Gallery and Featherstone Center for the Arts are combining forces to feature the paintings and assemblages of the husband and wife team, Alden and Beth Phelps. Dragonfly Gallery will host an opening reception on Wednesday, July 27, from 4 to 7 pm at 91 Dukes County Avenue in Oak Bluffs. The show continues through July 31. 508-693-8877.

Both artists will facilitate workshops at Featherstone in which family pairs will learn to make tabletop puppets. The three-day workshop is July 27, 28, and 29 and costs $140 per pair. The last day of the workshop will include a performance with the newly created puppets. The week will end with a puppetry concert for children on Monday, Aug. 1 from 6:30 to 8 pm. Admission is $5. Featherstone is on Barnes Road, one-half mile north of the four-way stop. 508- 693-1850.

A challenge in black & white

Nancy Shaw Cramer of Shaw Cramer Gallery has invited her regulars — old and new — to create works in black, white, and shades of gray. The result is a unique show, beginning with a reception on Friday, July 22, from 6 to 8 pm. Featured artists include Christian Brown, Philip Dusenbury, Eva Gallant, Laurie Goddard, Dawn Greeley, Eric Jensen, Jane Birdsall Lander, Loeber & Look, Amy Maas, Jennifer McCurdy, Denise Mahone, Antoinette Noble, Leslie Reuther, Eduardo Rubio-Arzate and Adele Schonbrun. Ancient art with contemporary aesthetics

Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks welcomes Louis Sclafani and his new body of work, “Barattolo.” His unique glass sculptures are inspired by ancient Roman lidded jars wrapped in spun glass and copper. Meet the artist this Saturday, July 23, from 5 to 7 pm at 683 State Rd. in West Tisbury. The show runs through Aug. 12. 508-693-6026.

Intriguing abstracts


Cousen Rose Gallery presents the mixed media abstracts of Deborah T. Colter with a reception on Saturday, July 23, from 7 to 9 pm at 71 Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. While you’re there, don’t miss the Judith Kinsman watercolors and photos by John Breckenridge. The Colter show runs through July 29. 508-693-6656.

Bling from Italian designers

Optional Art, on 7 Winter Street in Edgartown presents a designer collection jewelry trunk show, beginning Friday, July 22, from 10 am to 9 pm. Go for the gold — one-of-a-kind pieces from Italy. The trunk show continues through July 24. 508-627-5373.

“Forgotten Corners” in watercolor


Ann Howes, explores what she calls “the forgotten corners around me” in her show, “It’s a Watercolor World.” In “Points of View,” landscape artist Daniel Smith assimilates eight years of Vineyard life into his work. Award-winning artist Sharon McCann Daly works pastels into land and seascapes. They’re all in one place, Old Sculpin Gallery on Dock Street in Edgartown. An artists’ reception will be held on Sunday, July 24, from 6 to 8 pm. The show runs through July 29. 508-627-4881.

Under the wire


Vineyard Lights proprietor Judy Hartford presents a three-day event beginning Saturday, July 23, in which sculptor Matthew Grabelsky will create three-dimensional art using wire mesh. The resulting creations — goats, tigers, elephants, etc. — will be available for sale upon completion and Grabelsky will be taking orders for custom sculptures. Grabelsky will be working in front of Yes, We Have No Bananas Gallery in West Tisbury. The exact hours are iffy, but Judy Hartford promises that he’ll be there pretty much all day, each day. Louisa Gould, noted marine and travel photographer, discusses the ins, outs, ups, and downs of getting remarkable pictures. From aerial views to tight close-ups, Louisa reveals her secrets for producing fine-art photography.
