The serenity of Ted Meinelt's watercolor of Chilmark Chocolates
on the cover of the community center's program book is the perfect
counterpoint for the events and happenings taking place at a breathless
pace and chronicled in the pages of the program book. Mr. Meinelt,
a retired art teacher, has been doing the cover art - peaceful scenes
of Chilmark landmarks - for the center's program book for as long
as anyone can remember, more than 20 years.
There is a treat in store for visitors to the library's meeting
room where art shows are held. Ruth Kirchmeier's colorful wood cuts
are being shown along with Hermine Hull's oil paintings. They complement
each other beautifully. The show will be up until the end of the
month. Be sure not to miss it.
At 8 pm tonight, Thursday, July 21, Gil Bettman will give a talk
examining how Steven Spielberg established a new standard in film-making
with his 1974 movie, Jaws, at the community center.
Next Thursday, July 28 at 8 pm, also at the community center, artist
and longtime Chilmark resident Wendy Weldon, will talk about life
in Chilmark and about being an artist.
And next Monday July 25 the center will hold a talent show, starting
at 6:30 pm.
The women walkers meet next Thursday, July 28, 9 am, at Ripley's
Field (Red Coat area), off Lambert's Cove Road, Vineyard Haven.
Call Julie Coleman at 508-645-2261 before 9 am for more details.
Next Wednesday July 27, the Martha's Vineyard Independent Film Festival
will show a film by Russell Freidenberg on the native American poet
and activist John Trudell at 8 pm at the community center.
Troubadour Billy Schustik will present sea stories, songs, and music
at the library from 2 until 3 pm next Wednesday, July 27.
And on Thursday, July 28 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, New York Times reporter
Linda Greenhouse will talk about her new biography, Becoming
Justice Blackmun. She had sole access to primary source materials.
Banners are flying from the library and the community center announcing
the first-ever Vineyard book festival put on by the community center
summer program and the Friends of the Library. The one-day event
will take place on Sunday, August 7 from 10:45 to 6 pm and feature
more than 30 authors with Vineyard connections. Authors will read
from their works, discuss the intricacies of writing a book, and
sign books. The list of authors include many Chilmark writers -
Russell Hoxsie, Stan Hart, Merrily Fenner, Linda Fairstein, and
Alan Dershowitz, among others. Refreshments will be available.
