July 21, 2005

As I was driving to work the other day, I was struck by the fact that I am lucky enough to drive down one of the most beautiful stretches of road on Martha's Vineyard. I leave my house and have the pleasure of going by the stand at Morning Glory Farm, then their fields that are just bursting forth in a sea of green. Then I pass Sweetened Water Pond and Floyd and Jan Norton's field, ripe with butterfly weed or some such wildflower, and then Sweetened Water Farm, with beautiful horses and, earlier in the season, daisies everywhere. How can one beat such a scenic commute to work? Surely my sister is not so impressed as she rides the T into downtown Boston each day. And is anyone besides me completely fascinated by Morning Glory Farm's sprinklers? They are so amazing to watch. I'm in awe of their power, especially as I hook up the pathetic excuse for a sprinkler that I have at my house.

Happy birthday to Jack Murray, who turned five on July 20 and who is having a pirate party on Saturday. Happy Birthday wishes also go out to Paul Brewer, who celebrated on July 18, as did Gavin Fynbo. And my biggest happy birthday wishes go out to my son, Riley, who turns five today! We are celebrating in style with a Buzz Lightyear theme this year. I'm just in total shock that he is five. Where does the time go?

The annual shark tournament took place last weekend and was not without controversy. Many Islanders I have spoken to think that it is unnecessary killing just for the sake of it. I will concede that I hang out with very liberal group of people, but the consensus among the people I've spoken with is that it is a waste of these majestic creatures and that just because we can do something, doesn't mean we should. I guess it's something to think about. Should the Island be known for having the largest shark tournament in the world? Is that the reputation we want out there? Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. But, it certainly has provoked some arguments around the dinner tables this week.

Another hot topic at the beach the other day was the significant portion of State Beach roped off to protect the piping plovers in that area. I was asked by a few anonymous parents to write something about endangering the health and well-being of children forced to walk great distances on a very busy road due to a significant decrease in open paths at the beach, in order to protect these birds. The group of parents talking last week all agreed that the plovers are entitled to protection but that the current roping off of so many paths to the beach is going a bit overboard. As one mom said, the safety of those going to the beach also needs to be considered. There has got to be a better way to protect everyone - the birds and the people.

Congratulations to Felicia Cheney, the new director at the Edgartown Public Library. I'm sure she will be a great addition to the library and will be a big help in resolving the issues regarding the library expansion. She is intelligent, informed, and level-headed. Under her leadership, the library should flourish.

Speaking of the library, Donna Blackburn sent the following tidbit in via email:

“The Edgartown Library would like to send a long-overdue 'Thank you' to Mr. Ron Walsh for giving us two age-appropriate water and boating safety classes. Mr. Walsh brought lots of handouts for the youngsters, assuring that they'll remember the valuable lessons learned at this yearly library presentation. Our thanks also go out to Mrs. Edith Blake for her slide presentation on Egypt. The Massachusetts Library Association's Summer Reading theme this year is 'Going Places @ Your Library,' so this armchair tour for the 20 or so young participants was just the ticket! Please drop by the Edgartown Library to see where else we're 'going'!”

Remember to get me your news - birthdays, anniversaries, parties, whatever. I write my article on Sunday night, so keep my deadline in mind. Have a great week.
