Stars lend voices for awareness
On Wednesday, Aug. 3, country legend Emmylou Harris and special guest
Tom Rush will give a benefit performance on the Island. The goal of
the concert is to raise awareness and funds for Vietnam Veterans of
America Foundations Cambodia Fund (VVAF), an international humanitarian
organization. The VVAF will also donate a portion of the funds raised
to Marthas Vineyard Community Services. The concert will be
preceded by a cocktail reception.
Tickets for the event are $150 and are tax deductible. For more information

Young performers are on Island stages
Starting tomorrow, two new shows will open for the Islands viewing
pleasure. The Childrens Theatre of Island Theatre Workshop,
Inc., will put on three performances of a brand-new, original musical
called Toward the Golden Shore. The show begins at 7:30
pm at the Oak Bluffs Sailing Park.
Troubled Shores, Inc. will also put on a new show, presenting Pants
on Fire, a completely original show created by IMP camp students.
The show opens at 7:30 pm at the Oak Bluffs School.
Next Friday, July 29, at noon, the Marthas Vineyard School of
Ballet will open its own performance of Anastasia at the
Edgartown School gymnasium. The show is free.
Trunk show
On Friday, July 22, Cindy Halle and New York designer Nina McLemore
will present the Nina McLemore summer and fall collections at a trunk
show at Lola Tortolas Shop on Winter St., in Edgartown. A portion
of the proceeds will benefit Houses on the Move. The show will continue
through July 26.
Show your talent
The Junior Art Show will take place at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs
on Tuesday, Aug. 2, and you can enter your work. The show, open to
anyone under the age of 16, will include photography, mixed media,
painting, monotone drawing and colored drawing. Prizes will be awarded
to the winners of each category. Come along either to enter work,
or just to observe and vote for your favorites.

Art opening up Island
The Yates Gallery in Aquinnah will host a reception on Saturday, July
23 for Island artist Josh Yates. Mr. Yates has been painting Nomans
Island from the same vantage point for the past three years. See a
selection of these paintings showing the island in many kinds of light,
including moonlight. The gallery is open daily from 1 to 7 pm.

Heres the art, wheres the fire?
Artists Chris Dreyer, and Peg and Jane Thayer show their work at the
Firehouse Gallery, Dukes county Ave., Oak Bluffs, beginning with a
reception Saturday, July 23, 4 to 6 pm. Ms. Dreyer makes fascinating
assemblages with multiple materials, including special paper, gold
leaf, and vintage photos. Peg Thayer will show her interpretation
of Vineyard and southwestern landscapes in oil. In addition, the Thayers
will sign copies of their book, Elderescence: the Gift of Longevity.

Choreographers premier new work
This evening at The Yard in Chilmark, four dance makers will premier
their work. Leonard Cruz, Erica Essner, Peter Sciscioli, and Cheng-Chieh
Yu have been developing the new work for the past four weeks. All
are participants in the Yards Bessie Schonberg Choreographers
and Dancers Residency. This unique program brings together choreographers
and dancers who live and work together for one month on the Island.
The show is the product of that collaboration.
The dances will be performed by Suzanne Chi, LoMa Familiar, Benjamin
Rasmussen, Paul Singh, Courtney Smith, Matt Sweeney, Mandarin Wu,
and Wen-Shaun Yang.
The Yard, off Middle Road, Chilmark, dance performances are ThursdaySaturday,
July 21, 22, 23, at 8:30 pm; a pre-concert talk begins 8 pm. Tickets
are $15 or $12 for seniors and students. Call 508-645-9662.
Painting on the Island
Painter Wendy Weldon shares her artwork along with stories of her
past Chilmark experiences and a glimpse of her life as an artist on
the Vineyard. Thursday, July 28, 8 pm at the Chilmark Community Center.
