Stars lend voices for awareness

On Wednesday, Aug. 3, country legend Emmylou Harris and special guest Tom Rush will give a benefit performance on the Island. The goal of the concert is to raise awareness and funds for Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation’s Cambodia Fund (VVAF), an international humanitarian organization. The VVAF will also donate a portion of the funds raised to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. The concert will be preceded by a cocktail reception.

Tickets for the event are $150 and are tax deductible. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 617-236-5830 ext. 108, or e-mail at casey@adsventures.net.

Young performers are on Island stages

Starting tomorrow, two new shows will open for the Island’s viewing pleasure. The Children’s Theatre of Island Theatre Workshop, Inc., will put on three performances of a brand-new, original musical called “Toward the Golden Shore.” The show begins at 7:30 pm at the Oak Bluffs Sailing Park.

Troubled Shores, Inc. will also put on a new show, presenting “Pants on Fire,” a completely original show created by IMP camp students. The show opens at 7:30 pm at the Oak Bluffs School.

Next Friday, July 29, at noon, the Martha’s Vineyard School of Ballet will open its own performance of “Anastasia” at the Edgartown School gymnasium. The show is free.

Trunk show

On Friday, July 22, Cindy Halle and New York designer Nina McLemore will present the Nina McLemore summer and fall collections at a trunk show at Lola Tortola’s Shop on Winter St., in Edgartown. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Houses on the Move. The show will continue through July 26.

Show your talent

The Junior Art Show will take place at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs on Tuesday, Aug. 2, and you can enter your work. The show, open to anyone under the age of 16, will include photography, mixed media, painting, monotone drawing and colored drawing. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category. Come along either to enter work, or just to observe and vote for your favorites.

For more information on how you can enter, call 508-693-4018.

Art opening up Island

See a selection of these paintings showing the island in many kinds of light, including moonlight. The gallery is open daily from 1 to 7 pm.

Here’s the art, where’s the fire?

Artists Chris Dreyer, and Peg and Jane Thayer show their work at the Firehouse Gallery, Dukes county Ave., Oak Bluffs, beginning with a reception Saturday, July 23, 4 to 6 pm. Ms. Dreyer makes fascinating assemblages with multiple materials, including special paper, gold leaf, and vintage photos. Peg Thayer will show her interpretation of Vineyard and southwestern landscapes in oil. In addition, the Thayers will sign copies of their book, “Elderescence: the Gift of Longevity.”

Choreographers premier new work

This evening at The Yard in Chilmark, four dance makers will premier their work. Leonard Cruz, Erica Essner, Peter Sciscioli, and Cheng-Chieh Yu have been developing the new work for the past four weeks. All are participants in the Yard’s Bessie Schonberg Choreographers and Dancers Residency. This unique program brings together choreographers and dancers who live and work together for one month on the Island. The show is the product of that collaboration.

The dances will be performed by Suzanne Chi, LoMa Familiar, Benjamin Rasmussen, Paul Singh, Courtney Smith, Matt Sweeney, Mandarin Wu, and Wen-Shaun Yang.

The Yard, off Middle Road, Chilmark, dance performances are Thursday–Saturday, July 21, 22, 23, at 8:30 pm; a pre-concert talk begins 8 pm. Tickets are $15 or $12 for seniors and students. Call 508-645-9662.
