Members of the Volunteer Firefighters Association are getting ready for their “Backyard Bash” to be held on the Community Center playing field next Wednesday, August 3, from 4 pm until sunset. Besides the hot dogs, burgers, watermelon and corn, they will provide live music and performances by Jennifer Clarke, Judd Fuller And the Refills, the Mike Benjamin Band, and Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. There will also be a raffle. Admission is free but they have no objections to donations, which will benefit the association, which cares for injured firefighters and produces the Christmas and Halloween parties for children every year.

The library’s big fundraising event, the annual book sale, will be this weekend at the community center, Saturday, July 30, from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday, July 31, from 10 am to 1 pm. There are always good bargains to be found, as well as unexpected finds not readily available elsewhere — like a first-year Latin grammar, if that happens to be your field. Carol Merry and Sarah Andresen and a host of other volunteers are running the sale this year. It’s not to be missed.

The Chilmark Town Affairs Council will have its annual meeting next Tuesday, Aug. 22, 7:30 pm at the Community Center. Everyone is welcome. The meeting is an opportunity for seasonal and year-round residents to meet each other and to discuss town issues together with the selectmen.

Next Wednesday’s evening program series talk at the library will be for fishermen and anyone else who wishes to learn something about knot-tying. Veteran fisherman Bill (“Chip”) Chipman will discuss recent developments in sport fishing knots. New knots for trolling, conventional reel casting, spinning, and fly fishing will be evaluated for use with nylon monofilament, braided Dacron, gel spun polyethylene (“super braid”), and fluorocarbon. The time is 5:30 until 6:30 pm.

Next Thursday, August 4, The Yard will present its premiere performance of the several-night series, “Created by Carly Simon, Dances at The Yard,” at the Patricia N. Nanon Theatre off Middle Road. A post-performance supper will be catered by Jaime V. Hamlin for this special benefit opening. To reserve tickets and for more information, call The Yard at 508-645-9662.

Zee and Bill Gamson are happy to have their old friends, Marion and Bob Ross visiting. Bob will give a talk on his new book, “Slaves to Fashion,” about the rebirth of sweatshops at the Bunch of Grapes next Friday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 pm.

Roberta Gross will open a two-week show of new abstract paintings at the library on Saturday, July 30, with a reception from 4:30 to 5:30. Everyone is welcome.

Michael and Audrey Straight of Rockville, Md. are at the Straight’s house at Quitsa. Also at the Straights’ are Peter and Diana Kuh and their son, Nick, and his wife, Nicole, and their children, toddler Finn Kuh and their daughter Ellie and her friend Ben, all of Aylesbury, England. Margaret Kuh, of Rockville, Md. is visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Peter Ambulos at Quenames. More Kuhs in town include Anne Kuh Supko and her husband Peter Supko and their children, Cathryn and Alexander, from Kensington, Md.

Joyce Bowker of the Up-Island Council on Aging, (Howes House), has put out a call for donations of wheelchairs. The Howes House lends wheelchairs, walkers, and other equipment to those who need them. Their stock of nine wheelchairs has been depleted, so if you have one that’s not being used, give her a call at 508-693-2896.

Sculptor Jay Lagemann gave a lecture last week at the Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs on the casting of bronze statues, describing the entire process. Mr. Lagemann makes his statues in Thailand and then ships them home to the Vineyard. They may be seen at the Granary Gallery in West Tisbury.

Conrad Neuman, geologist, oceanographer, and poet, will show slides and tell tales of his ocean voyage around the world at the library, Thursday, August 4, 5:30 to 6:30 pm, as part of the evening program series.

Happy birthday to July celebrants Barbara Fehl, July 6; Dianne Congdon, July 11; Robert Conway, July 16; Kay Teel, July 27; Nancy Collins, July 29, and Emily Broderick, July 31. And happy anniversary to Robert and Phyllis Conway on July 16 and to Fred and Elinor Littleton, July 20.

The walking women will meet next Thursday, August 4 at 9 am at Fulling Mill Brook preserve. Parking is available on Middle Road. Call Julie Coleman at 645-2261 before 9 am for more information.

“Born Rich” will be the film at the Community Center next Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 8 pm. Presented by the Martha’s Vineyard Independent Film Festival.
