Oak Bluffs
July 21, 2005

Ocean Park is certainly at its peak of loveliness at this time of year. Go by early in the morning and you will be greeted by the wide expanse of green grass, highlighted by blossoming, colorful flower beds strategically placed throughout the park. A perfect backdrop to this scene is the sun reflecting off the ocean, sending shards of light off the water where they disappear into the bright blue sky. Walking back from the park to the David Healey Mall by the post office you will be greeted by more color and a social gathering. Here you can sit and talk with friends or meet new ones, but do enjoy the feeling of friendliness and joy. Listening to the sounds of the different voices and dialects makes you wonder if you are actually still in Oak Bluffs or perhaps in the market place of a different country. Are we not fortunate to be able to experience all this beauty in our town?

Ifetayo Yancey of County Road welcomed her family from Waldorf, Md. on Sunday, July 17. Her daughter Karima, an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland in College Park, and husband, Dion, a journalist at the Washington Post, were here with their two children, Christian, 12, and Allana, 10, to participate in the musical tribute for “Poppa” Lenny Yancey last Friday.

Sharifa Williams of Columbus, Ohio, a R.N. student at Otterbien College and daughter Erica, a student at Columbus State, with friend, Judy Bobier arrived on Tuesday. Ifetayo, Sharifa’s older daughter, a senior at Ohio State University, flew in on Thursday.

Ms. Yancey is expecting many relatives and friends to attend the tribute, including Mr. Yancey’s niece, Marchelle Raynor, a Boston School Committee member and her husband, James Raynor.

The Oak Bluffs Library continues with its many programs throughout August. On Tuesday, August 2 from 6 to 7:30 pm, the Family Board Games and Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament take place. Remember you must have your own Yu-Gi-Oh cards and there will be treats! Tamie DePaula’s storybook character Strega Nona visits the library on Wednesday, August 3 at 10:30 am. All ages are welcome to attend this event which promises to be very entertaining.

Heather and Leon Holt along with their twin sons Miles and Lucas, were here last week visiting with Heather’s mother, Ginny Hall. The family enjoyed many days at the beach with family and friends, and rumor has it that there was also time to fit in some golf.

We send congratulations to Craig and Anu Tankard who were married last Saturday in Oak Bluffs. Craig is the son of Carrie Tankard and the late George Tankard.

We send birthday smiles to Travis Bernard and Rachel Barrett who celebrate on July 29 and Bernie Crossland and Heather White on July 30. And tons of smiles to Joe Nunes who, on August 1, will be 95 years young!

Enjoy your week and send your news along.
