The big news this weekend is the day-long Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival on the grounds of the community center. Organized over the past year by the center’s summer program committee and the library, the event will take place this Sunday, Aug. 7, 10:45 am to 6 pm. The planners , undaunted by complicated logistics, have scheduled time and place to meet more than 30 authors, who will discuss their writing, read from their recent books, and also sign and sell them. The authors are a wonderful combination of writers, both Island residents and otherwise, including Judy Blume, Alan Dershowitz, Cynthia Riggs, Stan Hart, Russ Hoxsie, Paul Schneider and many others. Committee members caution that parking space is limited, so using any alternative transportation is a good idea.

Menemsha summer resident and long-time church choir leader Lia Kahler reports that she and her voice students will host an evening of songs, arias and spirituals to raise money for the restoration and preservation of the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. The concert, "Summer Voices", will take place at the chapel next Tuesday, August 9 at 8 pm. Helen Jennings, soprano, and Martha Hudson, mezzo-soprano, as well as Lia Kahler, will be among the performers. John Gorman is the pianist. For more information or to reserve tickets, call Lia at 508-645-3325.

Next week’s independent film festival offering will be several short films from Holland and Denmark , among other countries. At the community center Wednesday, August 10, 8 pm.

The speaker at the library’s evening program series next week will be Vicki Divoll, former attorney for the Central Intelligence Agency and former general counsel of the U. S. Senate Intelligence Committee, who will discuss domestic intelligence issues on Wednesday, August 10, 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

And next Thursday, August 11 Jack Fruchman, Jr. will read from and discuss his new book, "Atlantic Cousins" about Benjamin Franklin and his circle of visionary friends. At the library, 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

Lillian Kellman tells stories to children Saturday mornings at the library from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

And storybook character Strega Nona, the witch, comes for a visit to the community center, "all the way from Italy" on Monday, August 8, 11 until 11:30 am.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society will present the world premiere of the William Kraft concerto at 8 pm at the community center next Thursday.

Artist Nancy Prevo, Aquinnah summer resident for a quarter-century, has been back in town for a visit, staying at the Menemsha Inn with her daughter and son-in-law Lee and Bob Brockmann. Nancy continues to beguile viewers with her lyrical landscapes, one of which won the Joseph Cain memorial award at the Salmagundi Club show in New York this year. She also showed in the Pen and Brush exhibition, also in New York City. Nancy is well-known in Menemsha, where she used to set up her easel and paint all day long to the delight of locals.

The tireless walking women will meet next Thursday, August 11 at Menemsha Hills Reservation, off the North Road. Wear socks and long pants as protection against ticks, and bring water or juice for the hour or so of walking. For details, call Julie Coleman at 645-2261, before 9 am.
