The season of harvesting is here! The gardens are filling in, the plants are getting tall, and we picked three summer squash, two cucumbers, and one zucchini this morning, which is exactly six items more than we harvested last year! Professional farmers we aren’t, but we have a good time checking the plants daily — weeding, watering, and talking about our future gardens. When I think of the gardens my mother tended in my youth and those of my grandfather, I realize how pathetic my garden is. But it’s a start, and my mother would be thrilled that we are carrying on the tradition.

My brother Bobby and his daughters Abby and Gwen have been in town all week. We’ve all had a great, albeit hectic, time together. Riley and Amelia are quite enamored with their Uncle Bobby and rightly so. And Riley has been all but glued to Gwenny this week. My sister Pam, her husband Phil, and daughter Evie arrived Friday so we were all together for the weekend. It’s a great chance for all the kids to get together. Growing up, I really took it for granted having 10 cousins living on the Island. I didn’t realize until we all had kids how lucky we really were having so much family in one place.

Mary McCarron Dent has been in town for the last week and will remain on the Island for a few more weeks, spending some time in Aquinnah and then back to spend another week with her parents, Dick and “Granny Annie” McCarron. Mary and I caught up with each other when she brought her beautiful boys, TJ and John, over to the house for a visit. TJ will be three in September, while John is a mere nine weeks old! It was great seeing them and catching up with each other’s lives.

Lila Sullivan, daughter of Amy and Tom Sullivan, celebrated her eighth birthday on July 25. The day was extra special because her Godmother, who also happens to be Amy’s best friend, was here from Philadelphia to join in the various birthday celebrations.

There is a big sign on Chase Road that says “Welcome Home, Paco.” Although not home just yet, Island painter Paco Santana, should be arriving home within the next week or so to continue his recovery from a construction-related accident a couple of months ago.

Happy anniversary to Pam Gardner and Phil Fleisher, who celebrated eight years together yesterday. Happy birthday to Pammy as well, and to our childhood neighbor, Robin Waller, whose birthdays are tomorrow.

I hope everyone had a chance to see Circus Smirkus over the weekend. What a sensational production! The kids are fantastic, the show is very professionally produced, and it is a lot of fun. This was my first year attending, though the circus has been coming to the Island for seven years. It can get a little pricey by the time you buy tickets for a family of four, plus cotton candy, drinks, popcorn, and souvenirs, but it doesn’t happen often and it is for a good cause and, in my opinion, it was well worth the money spent.

Graham Willoughby of Orange, Conn. was in town last week at his School Street home for the burial of his mother, Dorothy Lair Willoughby, who lived to be 98 years old. Graham’s wife, Maureen, his son, two daughters, and Kyla, one of his three grandchildren were with him, as were his uncle Robert and his wife from Southbury. Dorothy grew up in the white house next to St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Vineyard Haven, the eldest of three girls. She graduated from Tisbury High School and worked for Mosher’s Photo Studio. She was married to Irving Willoughby in the Edgartown Methodist Church, after a 19-year engagement! Irving and Dorothy owned the paper store on Main Street in Edgartown until the 1980s (and of which, this writer has very fond memories). Their garden on School Street was always a beautiful sight in the summer. Irving, who died in 2001, was a great storehouse of Island history, having been born one of 12 on Main Street in Edgartown almost 100 years ago! Both Irving and Dorothy will be missed as part of the “old” Vineyard. The only near remaining relative of Dorothy Willoughby living on Martha’s Vineyard is her niece, Roberta Hopkins Mendlovitz of Oak Bluffs.

Have a great week everyone. August is here. Before we know it, summer will be winding down, so get out there and enjoy it.
