In Print: "More Vineyard Voices" released
August 4 , 2005

The Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society has announced the publication of "More Vineyard Voices – Words, Faces and Voices of Island People." The volume of portraits of Island people and excerpts from oral history interviews conducted by Linsey Lee, curator of the Society’s Vineyard Oral History Center, is a companion volume to "Vineyard Voices" (1998).

The stories of 77 Vineyarders are featured along with black-and-white photo portraits of each subject. Each story is told in the speakers’ own words. These deeply moving tales bring the past alive and teach vital lessons for life today.

Here are the words of our extraordinary Vineyard people – fishermen, store owners, teachers, farmers, businessmen, nurses, postmasters, lighthouse keepers, summer people and year-rounders. Their stories are shaped by their Island home, but the themes are universal — family bonds, joy and loss, the forces of nature, racial tension, the role of women.

More Vineyard Voices chronicles the changes and continuity of the past century. Here, children play marbles, go sliding and help their parents at sea, on the farm, and at the shop on Main Street. The Underground Railroad has a base in Aquinnah; the summer season ends precisely on Labor Day at 5 pm; Vineyarders go off to War; a Jewish community matures; racism flares at the Naval Air Station. Marlon Brando asks an Islander’s advice; Charles Lindbergh eats baked beans; Mary Martin whistles; and Jimmy Cagney rides his horse off the steamboat.

A book signing celebration will be held at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury on Wednesday, August 10 from 5 to 7 pm. All are invited. Several of the people who appear in the book will be on hand to offer short readings.

For more information, call Linsey Lee at 508-627-4441 x113.
