Music Preview: Chamber society's world premiere
August 4 , 2005

Composer William Kraft.
The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society will present the world premiere of Concerto a Tre, a new work by composer William Kraft, at its next pair of concerts on Monday and Tuesday, August 8 and 9, in Edgartown and Chilmark.

William Kraft, a resident of Los Angeles, is a celebrated American composer. A percussionist by training, he was a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 26 years and served for five years as the orchestra’s composer-in-residence. He directed the Los Angeles Percussion Ensemble for many years, chaired the composition department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has been commissioned to write new music for such distinguished organizations as the Library of Congress, the Kronos Quartet and the Boston Pops Orchestra.

Concerto a Tre, the centerpiece of the concerts being presented on Monday at the Old Whaling Church and Tuesday at the Chilmark Community Center, is dedicated to Delores Stevens, artistic director of the chamber music society and a lifelong advocate for new music. The piece is written for piano, violin and percussion and will be performed by Mrs. Stevens, violinist Sheryl Staples and percussionist Barry Centanni.

Also on this week’s concert program are compositions by Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms and Manuel de Falla.
