August has brought its usual humid, hot weather and new visitors whom we welcome to our special town. It also means that Ken and Joanne Debettencourt’s flowers have now grown enough so we see many of their lovely bouquets for sale at their flower stand on Wing Road. We had to wait a bit longer to view them this year. Because of the heavy spring rains, Ken had to replant his garden, but the wait was worth it. It is always amazing to watch the plowed field develop into a colorful array of flowers. It isn’t magic, though it always seems so, but Ken’s hard work that ends in such a pleasing crop.
The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society has some exciting outdoor movies planned for August at Featherstone in Oak Bluffs. On Aug. 16 the feature is an uncut version of the 1933 classic "King Kong"; "The Invisible Man" will be shown on Aug. 23; and on Aug. 30 the film "The Bride of Frankenstein" will be featured. For more information on any of these films, you may call 508-696-9369.
The Union Jack is flying high at Ken Rusczyk’s house. Bernard Walters, Jim Yeo, Mick Prince, and Jim Dooley have landed from "across the pond." The four longtime British visitors are decompressing and relaxing after spending a sweltering week in the Big Apple. Ken said that they are determined to enjoy the Vineyard lifestyle of beaching, jogging, reading, and visiting the local pubs.
We send Birthday Smiles to Joann DeBettencourt on Aug. 5, Ben deBettencourt on Aug. 7, while Ken DeBettencourt celebrates on Aug. 8. Extra special smiles to my baby Kati Alley who turns the big 40 on Aug. 11. (Her mother was very young when she was born!)
And speaking of birthdays, it was a grand celebration for forever young Joe Nunes, who had an amazing party arranged by Kay Manning on July 30 at the P.A. Club in celebration of his 95th birthday, which was Aug. 1. Many relatives and friends from all over the Island and off-Island came to offer congratulations. He is the oldest member of the P.A. Club and a much-loved friend to many people. There was dancing, a tasty buffet, birthday cake, love, hugs and even tears from those present as they came to honor this fine man.
Here is a chance for all book lovers to purchase good used books at a bargain price, as once again the Friends of the Oak Bluffs Library holds its annual book sale. The sale will take place on Saturday, Aug. 6, and Sunday, Aug. 7, from 9 am to 4 pm at the Parish House in the Campground. You still may donate good used books to this worthy cause today and tomorrow.
The wedding of Joseph deBettencourt and Nicole Aranjo was held last Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Oak Bluffs. It was a true family affair with Nicole’s daughter and Joe’s son, along with other family members, having an active part in the ceremony. After the wedding, everyone gathered at Sailing Camp Park where they enjoyed speaking with the guests, a delicious buffet dinner, and much laughter and celebration. Among the off-Island guests were Joe and Jeannie Fontaine. Jeannie is the former Jeannie Ferreira, whom I had not seen for at least 30 years, so it was nice to chat with the couple and catch up on their family news. Joe and Nicole are now enjoying an Alaskan cruise. That is one way to beat this heat and humidity we have been having.
Enjoy your week and send your news along to me.
