Josephine F. Hehre
Josephine Frances (Carvill) Hehre died peacefully on July 23 at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oak Bluffs following a brief illness. A former resident of Oak Bluffs and Tisbury, “Jo” resided at Windemere for the past two years. She was the daughter of Joseph Francis and Muriel Smith Carvill and the beloved wife of Frederick William Hehre, Jr., M.D., who predeceased her in 1980.
Jo was born in Bath, Maine on Sept. 7, 1921 and as a young girl lived in Virginia and Texas where her father, a marine architect, worked for the Texas Oil Company and designed the Texaco Star and the “T” logo. She graduated from Montclair High School in New Jersey in 1939. She went on to the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and continued with her education at Columbia University, receiving her bachelor of science degree in nursing education in 1947. Between 1942 and 1949 she worked at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center as head nurse and medical supervisor, and it was here where Jo met Dr. Frederick Hehre. They were married in 1947.
Music was always an integral part of her life. Josephine was a two-time all-state band member at Montclair High School, first chair violinist in the orchestra, and a recipient of academic honors in her senior year. Mrs. Hehre continued her musical interests in New York, regularly playing string quartets with Virginia Apgar in the “None-Such” group.
In New Haven, Conn., between 1956 and 1975, she was a member of the New Haven Chorale, the early music program at Yale University. She was also a violinist and choir member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. As a member of St. Thomas’s, she served on the alter guild and was a member of the American Association of University Women at Yale, as well as a volunteer for the Red Cross. Her deepest musical interest lay in recorder music, instruments and early baroque music. She became a certified American Recorder Society member and teacher in 1971, and held that credential for more than 20 years.
Mrs. Hehre was first introduced to the Vineyard in 1946 by her husband, who had been summering on the Island since the 1930s. In 1959, the Hehres purchased their Eastville Beach home where they enjoyed many summers with their children, neighbors, and friends. During the year Jo taught recorder students in her home as well as at the Chilmark Community Center for 10 years.
Jo established her year-round Vineyard residency in 1981 following the unexpected death of Dr. Hehre in 1980. For 21 years she lived on Winyah Lane in Tisbury, remaining active in numerous Island organizations. She was a member of the West Tisbury Congregational Church choir and bell choir, a founding member of the Island Consort, a former vice-president of the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, the Want-To-Know Club, and a member of the Oriental Chapter of the Eastern Star in Oak Bluffs. She was also an operating room volunteer at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, a trustee emeritus of Trinity Episcopal Church in Oak Bluffs, and she served on the board of directors of the Vineyard Nursing Association.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Mrs. Hehre was predeceased by her husband, her son Frederick William Hehre III, and grandson Christopher Scott Slocum. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Hehre Slocum and her son, Richard Carvill Hehre, as well as grandchildren Benjamin Townsend Slocum, Jessica Elisabeth Slocum, Allison Carvill Van Glahn Slocum, Pamela Hale Vernick, Rachel Elizabeth Hehre, Victoria Stedman Hehre, Margretta Carol Hehre, Eleanor Josephine Hehre and Frederick William “Ned” Hehre IV.

Flavia W. Stutz
Flavia Wagner Stutz died on July 24 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Flavia was devoted to the town of Gay Head, now Aquinnah, where she lived year- round since 1975 after summering there since 1958. She was born in Ames, Iowa in 1925, daughter of a professor who later taught at Cornell University and the University of Virginia. Flavia met her future husband, Robert Stutz, while both attended Cornell University. They married in 1949 and had three children, Michael, and identical twins, Heidi and Cynthia. Robert became a professor of labor relations at the University of Connecticut in Storrs where he and Flavia raised the children, spending their summers in Gay Head.
The family traveled extensively, touring Europe for three months by Volkswagon bus and ocean liner in 1964, and living for 18 months in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 1966 to 1967 where Robert taught at the university and Flavia organized safaris and a return trip home through the Far East. From 1970 to 1971 they lived in Geneva, Switzerland while Robert was on sabbatical to study European labor issues.
After Robert retired from the university in 1975, he and Flavia moved to Gay Head to live year-round. There, Flavia served on the planning board for about 28 years, from 1976 to 2004, working to retain the rural character of the town that she loved. She and Robert were among the founders of the Gay Head Taxpayers Association that defended the town against the Indian land claim and negotiated the settlement of those claims. After their children grew up, Flavia and Robert continued to travel around the world with close friends until Robert’s death in 1998. Since then, Flavia and Camille Rose were inseparable friends.
Flavia had a lively intellect. She was an avid reader, bridge player, observer of local and national politics, and a life-long democrat. Her empathy and humor made her many friends. She loved to spend time at the beach and in the ocean. She had a positive outlook on the world and the integrity to speak the truth. She leaves her three children, Michael Stutz, Heidi Stutz, and Cynthia Craig, her son-in-law Kevin Craig, and two grandchildren, Zack and Tucker Craig.
She will be buried privately by her family in the Gay Head cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Vineyard Conservation Society, P.O. Box 2189, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568 or to the Island EMT’s.
