We wish a speedy recovery to Hildy Mitchell who is slowly recuperating from a very bad case of pneumonia.
The music program last Sunday was a great success at the First Baptist Church. This Sunday the congregation will be enjoying the installation of air conditioning.
Heather Chapman is delighting in all the summer events on her favorite Island this week. She is staying with her parents John and Laurel Chapman.
All grandparents say their grandchildren are the cutest and best and brightest. Now I understand. We are pleased to announce that our first grandchild, a sweet little girl named Rory Elizabeth Mayhew, arrived late at night on July 26. She is the daughter of Laura and Craig Mayhew of Herndon, Virginia. The photo that was sent shortly after birth shows she has little fat cheeks and wide-open eyes. And we will be happy to tell you that she is the cutest and best little baby we have ever seen.
Author Linsey Lee tells us that her new book "More Vineyard Voices" will be presented next Wednesday evening at the Ag Hall from 5 to 7 pm. These interviews and portraits by Linsey Lee are again published by the Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society. A few of the featured persons will read a few paragraphs. Of course, the new books will be for sale.
There are 77 new "faces and voices of Island people" in this book. Many of them are recalling early days in Tisbury. Some of these people are Betty Honey, Joe Stiles, Carlisle Cronig, Alice Issokson Shapiro, Nellie Briggs, and Tony King. There are stories from Almeda Reed, Stuart Bangs, John Hughes, Dean Francis Sayre, George "Snookie" Baptiste, and Joe Anders. Helen Duarte tells about working for the Lindberghs. Helen Lamb tells about the start of Jabberwocky. Seamond Ponsart Roberts shares memories from when her father was keeper of the West Chop light in the 1940s.
You will hear from Miles Carpenter about Machine and Marine and Tom Hale’s stories of the Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard. Ruth Stiller, Helen Issokson, Dorothy Brickman, and Ida Levine have tales about growing up in Vineyard Haven. Anna May Cecilio grew up in a Cape Verdean family here. Hector Asselin came here to the airbase and stayed to work at the Post Office. Shirley Smith started Shirley’s Hardware and tells all about it. These are just some of the familiar names whose memories of our town are featured in Linsey Lee’s new book. If you cannot make the book signing, copies are available from the Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Donald Mitchell. Happy birthday to Dr. Peter Laursen on Saturday. John Edmond Coogan celebrates one year on Sunday. Monday is a special day for Bobbie Donovan. Wish the best to Helen Estabrook on Wednesday.
Heard on Main Street: "It must be August. It takes two or three laps to find a space to park." |
