Fashion compassion & young people benefit
August 4, 2005

departing campers last April.

For the first time the Safe Haven Project is having a fundraiser for the Vineyard Project Camp. "Fashion Compassion" will be held next Thursday, August 11 at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown. Menemsha Blues and Vineyard Style Magazine have joined forces to present a fashion show and silent auction event that will benefit the camp.

For the past 11 years, young campers with HIV and AIDS have enjoyed Martha’s Vineyard in the spring. Each year the Island community generously opens up and supports the camp in every possible way. Food appears from everywhere, the Martha’s Vineyard Harley Riders take campers on exciting rides, pizzas are donated for parties, and most importantly the campers feel like they are part of the Island community. Even after the campers go home, the staff stays involved with them. Over the years several hundred kids have been helped by Vineyard Project Camp.

"Fashion Compassion" promises an unforgettable afternoon on the grounds of the historic Dr. Daniel Fisher House. A cocktail party with sushi bar and hors d’oeuvres will begin at 4 pm. The fashion show will feature styles from Menemsha Blues and their new Indigo Collection. A dozen models, all ages and occupations, come from the Island community and will take their turn on the catwalk.

A silent auction will tempt guests to bid on pieces by photographer Alison Shaw, author David McCullough, artist Enos Ray, and other great gifts, including airline tickets from Cape Air. One hundred percent of the money raised at the silent auction will go to the camp. A portion of the $100 ticket price is tax deductible.

Vineyard Project Camp coordinator Tony Lombardi hopes the event will raise enough money to pay for the entire April 2006 camp. Islanders know that Mr. Lombardi will do anything and everything for the camp. He will even gladly hand-deliver "Fashion Compassion" tickets to your door. Another highlight of the event will be a video overview of the camp program in which the campers talk about their experiences.

The camp is truly a community-driven project; more than 150 volunteers helped out last April. Vineyard Project Camp is nationally recognized as a model of community compassion. But despite the generosity of many Vineyarders, it costs thousands of dollars to make the weeklong camp possible. In addition to general operating expenses, a large portion of the cost is providing transportation for the young campers from their homes around the United States. Mr. Lombardi and his partner, David Butler, a health educator from Western Massachusetts, spend each year seeking grants and private contributions to raise enough funds for the upcoming camp. The generous folks planning "Fashion Compassion" are hoping to ease that burden.

"Fashion Compassion" may well become an annual event, but no matter what it takes, Mr. Lombardi and Martha’s Vineyard will welcome campers back to our shores this spring.

"Fashion Compassion," Thursday, Aug. 11, 4 to 7 pm, Dr. Daniel Fisher House, Main Street, Edgartown. Benefits the Safe Haven Project’s Vineyard Project Camp. Tickets $100, available at Menemsha Blues and Menemsha Blues Indigo stores. Call 508-627-2378 or 508-693-1767.
