Three flashers at the flea

Three of the Island’s favorite photographers, L.A. Brown, Ripley Odell, and Debra M. Gaines will show their work at the Chilmark Flea Market on Saturday, August 13 and Wednesday, August 17, from 8:30 am to 2 pm. The flea market is off Middle Rd., one mile east of Beetlebung Corner. Contact L.A. Brown at 508-627-1977; Ripley Odell at 508-693-7095; and Debra M. Gaines at 508-627-9989.

Dreamscapes at Dragonfly

The idyllic backdrops of your dreams probably look a lot like the paintings of Michele Dangelo. They’re soft and layered and sometimes pale, sometimes vibrant. Visit these vistas and the plein air paintings of Elizabeth Lockhart Taft at Dragonfly Gallery, 91 Dukes County Avenue in Oak Bluffs. The show begins on Wednesday, August 17, with a reception on Saturday, August 20, from 4 to 7 pm. It runs through Sunday, August 28. Dial 508-693-8877 for details.

Artist talk

Watercolor and oil painter, art teacher, children’s book writer and illustrator Leslie Baker discusses the differences in mediums and painting surfaces. This is one of a series of free talks by Island artists at Shaw Cramer Gallery on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. 508-696-7323.

A touring Europe and Asia in Bananas

A tree-lined dirt lane in Tuscany. Flowers floating in a pond in Monet’s garden. A centuries-worn stairway climbing to a door in Greece. All bathed in sleepy ancient light. Monet would be impressed. These are the impressionist photos of Barbara Sandson, whose work will be on exhibit at Yes, We Have No Bananas Gallery, and Vineyard Lights in Oak Bluffs. The opening reception will be at Bananas on Sunday, August 14 from 3 to 7 pm. The gallery is at 632 State Road in West Tisbury, and Vineyard Lights is on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. 508-696-5939.

Benefit fair and art talk

The Goddess Way Gallery is sponsoring a benefit, Artisans Fair for Emerging Artists on Friday, August 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at First Baptist Church on William Street in Vineyard Haven. Proceeds benefit Roots and Shoots. Meanwhile, back at the gallery, Bob Hyden, author of "African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard: A History of People, Places and Events, (2nd Edition – Revised and Updated 2005)” will talk about the artistic works of several African Americans and their relationship to the Island on Sunday, August 14, at 4 pm.

Goddess Way Gallery is at 13 Beach Street Extension, above Tropical Restaurant, in Vineyard Haven. 508-696-6433.

Vineyard shots at Featherstone

Aaron and Frayda Galvin are anything but technophobes. Creating giclee prints on an Epson 2200 printer – using pigment instead of ink – their photographic views of the Vineyard and beyond almost glow with the intensity of this newish medium. Featherstone Center for the Arts will exhibit the best of these prints, beginning with a reception on Thursday, August 11, from 4 to 6 pm. The show runs through August 18. Featherstone is located on Barnes Road, one-quarter mile north of the four-way stop in Oak Bluffs. 508-693-1850.

Buy art in a thrift shop?

You bet! The Fourth Annual Chicken Alley Art and Collectibles Sale will be held on Sunday, August 14, from 3 to 6 pm at the Thrift Shop on 38 Lagoon Road in Vineyard Haven. Proceeds benefit Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. Admission is free, so you have no excuse to "chicken out.” 508-693-2278.

Sequoia artists

Third generation Belgian jeweler Yves Kamioner collaborated with Hugh Glenn to create the Sequoia jewelry collection. Meet the artists of Sequoia at Optional Art at 7 Winter St., in Edgartown this Friday, August 12, from 10 am to 5:30 pm. 508-627-5373.

Wine soiree at Ott Gallery

If you missed last week’s wine soiree at Ott Gallery, you’ve got another shot at it. Meet artist Lanny McDowell and get a sneak preview of his paintings scheduled to be exhibited on Sept. 3 at the West Tisbury Grange. Two the participating galleries are Hammond Harkins/John Stobart Gallery on 31 N. Summer Street and Eisenhauer Gallery on 38 N. Water Street.
