Now upon awakening in the morning I am greeted with a view of hot pink sunrises and a blanket of heat already creeping its way into the day as August brings summer to its peak. The one benefit I have found left by those hungry caterpillars this spring is, that as a result of their "leaf pruning,” I now have unobstructed views of beautiful sunrises as they are no longer blocked by the leaves of the trees.
We send birthday smiles to Heather Hill on August 13, and a parcel of smiles to the following Woodside Village residents who have celebrated or will celebrate birthdays this month: Alyce Sylvia, August 2; Annie Smith, August 3; Roberta Mendaivitz, August 13; Marge Chesnard, August18; Rhoda Tappan and George Thibault, both August 26; and B.J. Silva on August 29.
The Friends of the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging are sponsoring a Giant Flea and Artisan’s Market in Waban Park this Sat., August 13 from 8 am to 3 pm. There will be more than 33 artisan’s booths and many flea-find tables. If you have items you would like to donate to their white elephant or baked goods tables, please bring them to the senior center tomorrow, August 12. For more information, call Karen at 693-0165.
Lois, David, Laura, and Lucas DeBettencourt were on the mainland last weekend for the sixth "Quinquennial” Reunion of the O’Connell-Simmons Families. It was a Cape Cod party this year. For those that arrived early, there was a gathering on Friday evening at the home of Anne and Ray Prescattano of Bourne. On Saturday, the crowed swelled to more than 100 as everyone spent the day with Janet and Michael Shea of Monument Beach. Goodbyes were said on Sunday over a brunch in Forrestdale with Jay, Becky, Jordan, and Dylan Debettencourt as the host family. Although the family originated in Somerset and then settled in North Dighton, it is evident that the third and fourth generations have moved on as they came from nine different states besides Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.
There will be a special craft program on August 17 at 10:30 am at the Oak Bluffs Library for youngsters six years old and up. Come and sign up at the Children’s Desk and then enjoy painting lanterns for Illumination Night.
Claudia Metell hosted a party with choir friends in celebration of Martha Stewart’s release from home confinement. Unfortunately, Martha ran into a slight snag and will be detained until August 31.The party went off nonetheless in four-part harmony and grand Martha Stewart style. Fun was had by all. Hats off to Martha!
Boy Scout Troop 93, sponsored by the Oak Bluffs Firemen’s’ Civic Association, arrived back on-Island on Sunday after a week at Hidden Valley Camp in Gilmington, N.H. Attending from the Island were eight scouts and three adults. For the third year in a row the troop came back with the Boy Scout Spirit Award. The scouts completed all their merit badges and participated in a three-hour canoe trip, among other events.
On Sunday, more than 40 Oak Bluffs firemen lined the gangplank at the SSA Wharf in Oak Bluffs to wish Godspeed to two of their own as Oak Bluffs Fire Department Assistant Chief Pete Forend and Lt. Paul Humber left for a tour of duty in Kuwait. Both men are in the U.S. National Guard and now join others of their group to an overseas assignment. A proper salute was given by all those present, as they showed their respect and love for their department comrades. Along with family members and other friends who were present, we send our prayers for their safe return.
