Pulling strings to help the children

This Saturday morning at 10:30 am the Spindrift Marionettes will present the second and final performance of “Kate Crackernuts” at the Unitarian-Universalist Society on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. This Scottish classic is the tale of a brave young woman, fairies, and magical spells.

A $4 donation is suggested, which will benefit the Mama Bakhita Home for Disabled Children in Zambia.

Fun in the sun

Let your imagination run wild this Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the first annual Sandcastle/Sculpture Contest at South Beach in Edgartown. The event, presented by the Edgartown Board of Trade, is open to all, split into groups of ages 12 and under and over 12. All entrees will be judged by a panel sure to cover all the bases, featuring a builder, engineer, architect, as well as a school-age child. Building tools and aids may be used for construction, but may not be present in the final product.

For a leg up in this year’s contest, turn to Lucinda Wierenga’s “Sandcastles Made Simple.” This step-by-step guide toward building better sandcastles offers several tips and pointers toward making better sand creations. The book covers all aspects of sandcastle making from history and tools, all the way up to landscaping and contest tips. Learn how to create arches, roofs and several other architectural elements. Fun and easy to use, not to mention portable enough to carry to the beach, this book is sure to give you an advantage when it comes to the tricks of the trade.

Contest registration begins at 9 am, Wednesday, Aug. 3, construction at 10 am. Entry fee is $5. For more information and a complete set of rules, call 508-627-8794. Rain date is Thursday, Aug. 4.

The future is now

Jason Moran, an acclaimed “rising star” of the jazz world, is coming to the Vineyard this Saturday, July 30 to perform an acoustic show at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. Moran, the headman of a trio, has become a well-known pianist in the jazz world, recently being recognized as “Pianist of the Year,” by the Jazz Journalists’ Association. Moran has established his own artistic vision toward music as an interpretative art and as a result of this, has experimented with a wide range of musical styles, including blues and hip-hop, to go along with jazz.
