The main topic on everyone’s mind is the traffic. It must be August. It seems that Islanders are the ones who are filling the roadways because I recognize at least half the drivers. They should know better than to go out in the midday sun. Cars are traveling so slowly into Edgartown that it is now called Turtletown.
Speaking of midday sun, the ocean is lovely and plenty warm now for swimming. I don’t think I have ever waited so long to try it out. When I stuck in a toe in late June, the water was awfully cold. I have discovered that there is a fool-proof way to determine the water temperature. You watch the ages of the swimmers. If the only ones in the water are under 12, you may want to wait a few days. As the water gets warmer, the ages of the swimmers go up as well.
Mark Lovewell was the feature of the Wednesday night children’s program at the Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society last week. Reports are that all enjoyed the special evening. This week he hosted an open house to celebrate issuing his second CD of sea shanties.
Congratulations to M.J. Munafo. She has been selected to receive the Ruth J. Bogan and Ruth Redding Creative Living Award. This is given to an Islander who exemplifies the spirit of the Vineyard and has made a contribution to Island life. M.J. is recognized not only for her commendable job in making The Vineyard Playhouse what it is today, but also for her work with children in the schools. From the Teenprov to the Fourth Grade Theater Project as well as The Fabulists, M.J. has brought the delights of theater into the lives of many Island children.
The Vineyard Haven Library Book Club will meet next week. On Thursday, Aug. 18, at 1:30 pm readers will gather to discuss "Founding Mothers" by Cokie Roberts. The book offers some insight into the lives of the women who made it possible for the men to create our nation as well as into the lives of many of the women whose efforts were necessary to the success.
A great deal of research has produced many fascinating stories about these women. This book is written by a woman who saw her mother grow into the job of U.S. Senator, replacing the father who had been killed in an accident. One important message she sends is that the possibilities are there and that women can take advantage of them as well as men. Both parents of Cokie (Boggs) Roberts served in the U.S. Senate for many years.
Be prepared to buy those big-ticket items on Saturday and Sunday. These are tax-free days in Massachusetts. There will be no sales tax charged on your purchases made on those days.
Congratulations to Skip and Carol Bailey. They celebrate 11 years together on Sunday.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out on Monday to musician Ray Frazio. Happy birthday to Gus Daniels who celebrates next Wednesday.
Heard on Main Street: "I am learning to prioritize. Now I will spend more time reading and less time dusting." |
