Make chicks payable to MV Community Services
August 11, 2005

"I foresee an Island-wide contest!" said Olga Hirshhorn (right), of the "Critter Quilt." Dolly Campbell (left) and Ms. Hirshhorn show off the quilt some lucky winner will own after Sunday's raffle.
"Rooster with Saddle Feathers" by artist Leigh Ann Parente is a mosaic of Venetian glass tile and found object. The proud rooster was made just for the Chicken Alley Art Show.

Inspiration can come from all sorts of things—a sunset, a speech, a grand slam event, say. Rarely does it come from a faded piece of gift-wrapping paper found on a sidewalk in Vineyard Haven. But, when a scrap of critter-crawling paper caught the eye of summer resident and expert quilter Lou Stinson, she scooped it up and set it aside. Might make a good pattern someday, she must’ve thought.
Well, when a group of West Chop women phoned her over the winter, at her home in Geelong, Australia, looking for a design for the quilt that the group of 15 friends hoped to make for the Fourth Annual Chicken Alley Art and Collectibles Auction to benefit Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, Ms. Stinson had the perfect idea.
"These little critters each had a big personality of their own," she said. "They were calling out for larger life."
And so she set work, picking out the color palette and design, and shipping squares of moseying turtles, proud owls, and curious lizards — "They look like they’re about to stride or swim or swim off the quilt" — to the States, where both beginner and veteran quilters were at-the-ready, happy to hand-stitch their respective patches, and create — together — a colorful, cozy, and warm piece of artwork to help raise money for the Island’s neediest families.
The idea for the Chicken Alley Arts and Collectibles Auction was Olga Hirshhorn’s — who said it came to her while admiring an oil painting she had purchased at the Thrift Shop for just $15. "Why not create an art show at the Thrift Shop—a take off on the summer gallery openings—and have it benefit MVCS?"
She discussed it with shop owners Dolly Campbell and Sandy Pratt, and voila, the annual Chicken Alley auction — which features all sorts of artwork from artists all over the Island — was hatched.
Now in its fourth year — with both "fun and serious" stuff-for-sale that includes more than 500 pieces of framed art — the auction, it’s anticipated, will be bigger and better than ever, especially if the last three seasons are any indication. While the first year generated a respectable $3,000, last year’s tally leapt to $28,000.
Art is for everyone in the eyes of the Chicken Alley auction—as well as for the good of the Island and its residents. Admission is free, and homemade refreshments will be served by the "Thrift Shop Gang," who help collect the art and clean the shop for the big event.
There’s still time. If you have a piece of art you would like to donate, or for more information, contact Dolly Campbell or Sandy Pratt at 508-693-2278.
The Chicken Alley Art Show, Sunday, August 14, 3–6 pm, MVCS Thrift Shop, 38 Lagoon Pond Road, Vineyard Haven. 508-693-2278.
