I am writing this week’s column in my new office. Unfortunately, it is still our old dining room. Mike and I are planning a small addition to the south side of our house, a new dining room. Then this space will become a much-needed workroom. Sitting in the place where the desk will be built in someday, I have a view of the garden on the east side and a big pink-flowering dogwood tree from the north-facing window. It already feels just right. Mike has been working all weekend on the roof of our sunporch, getting it ready to marry-up with the new roof of the addition. While he is busy planning the structure, beams and footings, I already see the table set for Thanksgiving dinner with Richard seated at the head.
Fair preparations continue. Please remember to pick up your Fair booklets at the Ag Hall. Someone will be in the office between 9 am and 1 pm; afterwards, booklets will be left on the front porch. The deadline for entry forms is Monday, August 15 at 5 pm. This year’s theme is Family Fair Traditions. Eleanor Neubert reports two new programs at this year’s fair. Jonathan Wood will present his show “Raptor Project – Birds of Prey” throughout the four days. The program is designed to entertain and to educate the public about raptors. On Saturday, August 20, there will be three performances for young children by “Toe Jam.” Fair dates are Thursday, August 18 through Sunday, August 21.
Lew and Frieda Kaplan are in their summer residence on Tiasquam Road, known as Sue Hruby’s house the rest of the year. The Kaplans and their visiting family will be here until September 7, when Sue returns from Jasper, Georgia, where she is spending the summer in the mountains.
Michael Stewart has been here visiting his mother, Jean Wexler. Michael and his long-time friend and performing partner, Will Pfluger, played a guitar concert together at Aboveground Records in Edgartown. The concert was arranged by another old friend, Donald Nitchie. Besides being a performer (CD’s and records under the name “Backwards Sam Firk”), Michael is a dealer in vinyl records, specializing in jazz and blues. He has returned home to Mill Spring, N.C.
The West Tisbury Library will be hosting two events this week. On Sunday evening at 7 pm, Dan Waters will read from his new book, “Needing Winter.” The program will be held at the Grange Hall. Admission is $20 and books will be for sale after the reading. Of course, there will be refreshments, homemade by the library trustees. The proceeds will benefit the Library Construction Fund. Tuesday, August 16, at 7:30 pm, best-selling novelist Elizabeth Benedict will speak at Howes House. Her topic will be “Writing Fiction From Your Own Life.” The event is free and co-sponsored by the West Tisbury Free Public Library and Renaissance House.
Sundy Smith asks that friends of Henry Clay Smith be reminded about a memorial service honoring his life to be held Sunday afternoon, August 14 at 1 pm. The service will take place in the field behind the West Tisbury Library. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the West Tisbury Library Gift Fund.
This Saturday, August 13, from noon to 6 pm, the Vineyard Conservation Society will host its 40 anniversary celebration at the Allen Farm on South Road in Chilmark. William Stewart and his committee have planned “a spirited day of local music, local food, environmental education, and activities for children.”
The Mazza Museum Summer Study Tour group came to the Island last Thursday to visit the studios of four illustrators of popular children’s books. West Tisbury writers/illustrators Leslie Baker, Carol Carrick, and Marc Brown, as well as Edgartown resident Norman Bridwell, hosted the group of teachers, librarians, and museum personnel from Ohio. The day ended with a clambake at the home of Marc Brown. The tour had included studios throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Happy birthday on Friday to my Chilmark colleague and friend, Jackie Sexton.
There has been so much comment about last week’s column about Karen MacKay’s illness. She now has a usable refrigerator, a hospital bed, and help with household chores. The Karen S. MacKay Benefit Fund is still operative, but another fund for tax-deductible contributions has been established, “You’ve Got a Friend” in care of the MV Coop Bank.
Thank you all for your kindness, concern, and generosity.
I have picked my first tomatoes, Sungold, and they are delicious. Tonight we will have the first big tomato in our salad. I got the cutest little pullet eggs last week from Tom Vogl and Katherine Long’s spring chicks. They are blue, white, brown, pink, and speckled. All beautiful and very delicious. Summer’s bounty is here.
