IÅfm not an arborist, but IÅfm beginning to question the wisdom of those who assure me that ÅgThe trees are fine. They shed their dead leaves so they can grow new ones.Åh As I watch the leaves steadily pile up on the dry brown grass I wonder if it will ever rain again.
We have quite a few winners to announce this week. Congratulations to David Seward, who won a first prize in the Vineyardiana category at the Agricultural Fair last week. His entry was a huge replica of the old Menemsha post office at the Menemsha Market, complete with post office boxes and Steve Dohanos painting.
And Ted Meinelt won second place in the same category for his ÅgChilmark Off-Season,Åh a Christmas-y display of little houses, snow on the ground, a collection of his watercolors of Chilmark landmarks and a Christmas tree hung with Ågsparkly stuff.Åh Ted also won a second for a flower arrangement on a fair theme (Family Fair Traditions) with ÅgTisbury and Teasels,Åh an arrangement of teasels and a small replica of the Mayhew coat of arms. Tisbury, Mr. Meinelt, an avid pursuer of Vineyard history, reminds us, was originally called Teasel-berry in England.
And Steve Meinelt won the Chilmark road race for the second year in a row. He is the son of Terry and Kathy Meinelt of Topsfield, and the grandson of Ted and Polly Meinelt of South Road.
The parade of Chilmark winners continues. Winkie Keith and Bonnie George won the MarthaÅfs Vineyard Garden Club first prize. They decorated an old bike with baskets of hydrangeas and sunflowers, both yellow and maroon, and added an old straw hat and a rolled-up magazine ÅgWeÅfre as excited as little kids with the blue ribbon,Åh exulted Bonnie.
Chilmark and Menemsha made a pretty good showing at the fair this year.
Winners of the libraryÅfs Brickner poetry contest attended a ceremony on Monday at the library, where they read their poems and received their awards. They were: First place in the high school category: Marina St. Andre-Sharkowitz; for her poem ÅgNew York Movie, 1939Åh (the title of a painting by Edward Hopper). Second place winner was Katrina Nevin for ÅgStill Life.Åh
First place winner in the junior high school category was Ava Geyer for her poem, ÅgThe Empire is LostÅh. Second place winner was Isabel Walsh for ÅgMy Singing Voice.Åh
The judges were all authors of childrenÅfs books, which are all available at the library. They were Leslie Baker of West Tisbury; Sarah Lamstein, and Bill Maynard.
Congratulations to the winners and may they all become poet laureates!
Julie ColemanÅfs walking group meets next Thursday Sept. 1, at 9 am at the Middle Road sanctuary, which is off Middle Road, near Meeting House Road. Newcomers are welcome. For more information, call Julie at 508-645-2261.
The town quilt, designed and stitched together several years ago as part of the townÅfs celebration of its tricentennial, is now on view for all to admire in the childrenÅfs room at the library. A number of people worked the squares, including Billie Hancock, Judy Gersh Worthington, and others, and it was sewn together by Stephanie Rossi. Kristin is typing up a key so everyone can see who did which vignette of Chilmark history.
I didnÅft know Karen McKay, but I enjoyed the quirky take on life she displayed in her wonderful cartoons and was sad to learn of her death last week. The whole Island will miss her blithe spirit. My condolences to her husband, Jack.
