Here it is, Sunday night. Illumination Night was Wednesday, the Oak Bluffs Fireworks were Friday night, and the Agricultural Fair will close its gates in about a half an hour. Raise your hand if you’re exhausted! I know I am. We skipped Illumination Night but did partake in the fireworks and made two excursions to the Fair. These were Amelia’s first fireworks, while big brother Riley is a seasoned professional with two other fireworks displays under his belt. Not being a fan of pyrotechnics myself, I made my once-a-decade appearance at the event just the same, mainly to witness my kids’ faces as they watched the beauty unfold in the sky. I will admit they were quite spectacular. But, bleeding heart liberal that I am, I can’t help but think of all the other (better?) ways we could spend that money. The Fair, on the other hand, is a throwback to my youth, and I wouldn’t miss it for anything. The only difference is that now I simply cannot ride all those wild rides I used to like so much without becoming ill. I guess my age is showing. But the kids have a great time, we spend a small fortune, and everyone comes home happy and exhausted.

Irene Resendes reports that her college roommate, Judy Rutelonis, of Auburn, enjoyed the past week on the Vineyard. Judy, a third grade teacher in Sutton, was seeking a little rest before the start of the school year and was joined in this endeavor by Beverly Brown, the recently retired superintendent of schools in Sutton, who is trying to learn how to relax and enjoy retirement! The three friends enjoyed a very full week of fun on the island, including the Fair, in which Judy entered one of her black-and-white photos of a campground cottage, the fireworks, and most of all, the beach. It sounds like a perfect vacation to me.

Mary McCarron Dent stopped by yesterday to return a video that, quite frankly, I completely forgot she had, and she reported that she had the perfect vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. On maternity leave, she was able to spend an entire month here, dividing her time between her parents’ house and a cottage up-Island. She had great weather, she didn’t have to worry about work or think about the day-to-day tasks of running her household and doing the usual things that every parent/spouse/adult contends with each day. She could just spend time enjoying her family and friends and resting up for her return to work! Good luck on your return to the real world, Mary!

Happy birthday wishes go out to Bill Bailey, who celebrated August 24, and to Bob Fynbo, who celebrates on August 28.

Shay Sullivan, son of Tom and Amy Sullivan, turned six on August 22. Part of his celebration was taking in a Red Sox game against the White Sox last week. Happy birthday, Shay.

Cheryl Welch reported another Mark Hess sighting, this time at the Fair, enjoying some good food and fun with his family. That’s two outings in two weeks. Wow! Mark, if you don’t watch out, this will become a habit!

Well – since all the excitement has been happening out of town this week, I don’t have much else to report. Summer is winding down quickly. Enjoy the time that’s left! Have a great week and get me your news.
