All roads did indeed seem to lead to the Fair this past week, as most of the Island funneled into West Tisbury to attend the four-day event. The weather held hot and sunny throughout the weekend. Eleanor Neubert proclaimed it a “very successful Fair.” The T-shirts sold out; there are only a few posters left unsold. Attendance was high.
Despite the wet spring and droughty summer, the produce displays were lush and diverse and abundant. When I was in the Hall to judge (Adult Art) on Wednesday evening, Andy Woodruff was setting up the most amazing display of fruits and vegetables I had ever seen. The flowers were lovely, many featuring unusual specimens. Gorgeous orchids, “black” dahlias and scabiosas and creamy white marigolds come to mind. Eleanor reported more livestock than ever being entered this year, especially poultry and rabbits raised by youngsters.
The Seward brothers’ display in the front room of the Hall was especially wonderful, featuring the old postboxes and Steven Dohanos’s original painting of the Menemsha Post Office that became a famous cover for the Saturday Evening Post.
The new Birds of Prey program was a hit, as were all of the musical and dance performances throughout the weekend.
As I spoke with Eleanor this morning (Monday) she was heading back to the Ag Hall to deal with the end of this year’s Fair and begin planning for next year. Thanks to all the hard workers whose efforts make this the premier event of our summer.
Ann Leggett, formerly of Edgartown Road, a well-known artist on the Island, has been here since last Wednesday. She always paints at the Fair and her images of horse-pulls, animals, and Fair-related subjects have been collected by many. This year, she had a “hot date with a handsome horse.” I saw the first pencil drawing of what will surely be a large and dramatic painting.
Muriel Bye was out to breakfast Sunday with her son, Steve, and his family, who have been here this past week. Bill Francis and his family were here visiting his parents, Ken and Jeanne.
Pat and John Durfee will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary this Saturday, August 27. I cannot spoil a secret, so will report next week on what they plan to do.
Perry Garfinkel is back as an official resident of West Tisbury, post office box at Alley’s and all. He is renting Milton and Virginia Mazer’s house off of Music Street for the winter, moving in a month early courtesy of Mark Mazer. Perry is staying close to home until the October deadline passes and he submits his new book, “Buddha or Bust: In Search of Truth, Meaning, Happiness and the Man Who Found Them All,” which will be published sometime next summer. Meanwhile, a feature article, also about Buddhism, will appear in the December issue of National Geographic magazine. Perry asks to be remembered to all with a note that his telephone number (after Sunday) is 693-5406 and his e-mail address is perrygarfinkel@aol.com.
Mary Jo Joiner is home after driving to Arizona with her son, Grant, a junior this year at Arizona State University. They stopped in Chicago to visit with Mary Jo’s parents, then met up with her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Betsy Fijolek, and nephew, Jeffrey, who is beginning his freshman year at Arizona State. Grant has been home on Stoney Hill Road for the summer, working for Cape Air.
I overheard my husband saying to someone yesterday, “This is the first real vacation I have taken in years.” He has spent the past two weeks re-roofing our sunporch, digging holes for the piers, which will support our new dining room, mixing and pouring seemingly endless bags of concrete, laying sills and floor joists. Last night, we stepped out onto the piece of plywood in front of Grace’s cat flap (the outside door and wall will remain for awhile) to have our drinks together and talk about where to put electrical outlets and such. We are already enjoying our new room. |
