Edgartown

September 1, 2005

It seems like it was just the other day that I was writing about summer coming, and now everyone seems to be talking about the change “in the air” — cooler nights, shorter days, less traffic, more parking. September is here and it’s a great time to have the Island back from all the summer craziness. The days are still warm, swimming is still great, but the pace is a little less frantic. But you never know which beach day might be the last one for the year, so cherish each one.

I’m happy to report that the Craig boys have returned, safe and sound, after spending the weekend in Westfield for an air show featuring the Air Force Thunderbirds. Riley got to meet one of the pilots and have his picture taken with him, and he also got several autographs. He came home with stories and souvenirs and, best of all, lots of excitement. Anyone who knows Riley knows how thrilling this weekend was for him. As Jamie is a former Navy pilot himself, I’m guessing he had a pretty great weekend as well.

With the boys away, Amelia and I had a girls’ weekend! After witnessing the plane crash during an air show at Katama Airfield as a kid, I don’t do air shows anymore so Amelia and I got some quality girl time here. Saturday we went out to breakfast, after which Amelia helped me clean a house (and I use the term “help” quite loosely here). Then Amelia spent a couple of hours with Pop (my dad) before we went out to dinner, then to the Flying Horses, and then out for an ice cream. On the way home from Oak Bluffs, Amelia declared, “Girls’ weekend is fun.” Sunday was spent at the beach with the Morris, Hess, Corsi, and Williamson families. It was such a nice weekend. It’s amazing how easy life is with only one child in tow!

The annual Edgartown Police Department vs. Fire Department softball game was Sunday evening, with the police winning by an undisclosed number. The game is always a lot of fun, with the Love Doctors providing music and entertainment on the sidelines. Kids run all over the place, splitting their time between watching the game and playing on the playground. This year, the Dukes County Savings Bank provided hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and drinks for a nominal fee, helping raise money to support friend and co-worker, Rick McCarron, who is facing some medical treatments in the near future. Whichever bank employee thought up the fundraiser, bravo! Good wishes go out to Rick during his illness.

Happy birthday to Emma Searle, who celebrated on August 25, Joseph Serpa who celebrated on August 24, and to Samuel Rollins, who also celebrated on or about August 25.

After a number of weeks in a pink arm cast, Elizabeth Williamson, daughter of Ann and John Williamson, is sporting a two-tone pink and blue cast as she recovers from a broken arm caused by a bike accident. Elizabeth had hoped to have the cast removed last Friday, but it wasn’t quite time. So, she will be making her fashion statement for just a bit longer.

It didn’t stop her from taking part in the Chilmark Road Race recently though, which she did with her dad and, though not confirmed, I suspect her mom as well. Great job, Elizabeth (and mom and dad too).

Good luck to Jonathan Ryan, who heads off to Emerson College on Saturday. Have a great year! Have fun, study hard, and call your parents!

School starts next week. Riley will be going to kindergarten, which has me absolutely petrified! How can he be going to school already? He seems to be taking it in stride but I think is a bit nervous nonetheless. Amelia will be attending Rainbow Place, which she is looking forward to. She wants to get a rainbow rock and run in the Rainbow Run, which doesn’t actually happen until May but is a big part of what “school” means to her. So, with school in mind, remember kids will be at bus stops or walking to and from school so please, drive carefully and remember the 20-mph speed limit in school zones.

That’s about all the news for now. Have a great week and be sure to get me your news.
