Oak Bluffs

September 1, 2005

Now this last week has offered a great variety of weather. Some days we got a tease toward fall, when the cooler weather left puffs of clouds scattered across the horizon looking as if a train had left a smoke trail across the sky. Then as we anticipated a downpour of rain, it suddenly dried up, but we were the recipients of a beautiful double rainbow followed once again by hot humid August. Perhaps by the time this column gets to print, the predicted rainfall will have arrived bringing an end to the drought.

Sorry I missed writing the column last week, but as I warned you, I was in Maine for a few days and couldn’t make the deadline. Maine was lovely — beautiful scenery and the residents were most friendly and helpful to us tourists. Our group even managed to examine a couple of parks advertising open houses so we could view their cabins and sites. I gave up any idea of living in one of those areas when one of the guides stated, “You are only permitted one pet, and it must weigh under nine pounds.” Now one of the birds at my feeders might make that cut but certainly not my two labs, who weigh in at 96 and 65 pounds.

Lynn Wadsworth had as her guests this month her sister and her family. Carol and Tim Testerman, along with their children, Nathan, Hannah, Bailey, Olivia and Avery, arrived for a week’s stay from their home in Paso Robles, Calif. Lynn’s children, James, Ashley, and Joel, enjoyed their cousins’ company and their beach days.

Dion and Debra Alley and four-month-old Paige Elizabeth drove up from Daniel Island, S.C., for a few days’ visit with Dion’s parents, Megan and Dennis Alley. While here Dion’s family joined the rest of the family — daughter Mary and her children, Talia and Jeremy, daughter Katie and her sons, Marques, Matt, and Nick Rivers, Lauren Weaver, and Jade Mazza — for a triple celebration at the Homeport: the August birthdays of Kati and Dion and the 50th wedding anniversary of their parents, which will occur on Sept.8.

The Pennacook Avenue Oak Bluffs Library will close after next Saturday, Sept. 3. It is hoped that the new library will be opened to the public in late September or early October. The exact date of the opening is as yet undetermined. Patrons are urged to come to the old library now to take home any materials they think they might want to have during the month of September. During the closing, those items can all be returned to the other two CLAMS libraries on-Island in Edgartown and Vineyard Haven.

We send belated birthday smiles this week to Ginnie Hall, who celebrated on August 23, retired Oak Bluffs Fire Chief Nelson Amaral, who had a milestone birthday on August 26, Chris Alley on August 28, and Alice Rose, of the beautiful flower garden on Wing Road, who was 95 years young on August 29. Looking toward September, we send smiles to Ed BenDavid on Sept. 2 and Ruthie Metell on Sept. 4.

Heather Holt and her sons, Myles and Lucas, who live in Natick, have been visiting with her mother, Ginnie Hall, this past week — filling their time with beach, swimming, and time spent with on-Island relatives.

There has been a shift in command at the Oak Bluffs Fire Department. Former assistant chief James Moreis Sr., a 40-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to deputy chief. Lieutenant Antone Ferreira, a 27-year member of the department, is now an assistant chief, and captain Peter Martel, who has been in the department for 34 years, has been appointed an assistant chief to fill in for assistant chief Pete Forend, who has been deployed to Kuwait for a time. Congratulations to you all.

The United Methodist Church Women in the Campground will hold their annual Labor Day weekend bake sale this Saturday, Sept. 3. The sale will take place from 9 am to 1 pm at the Arcade, which is the entrance to the campground on Circuit Avenue opposite Reliable Market.

We say goodbye to many of our summer visitors who are returning to their homes on the mainland and also to the many students who are now headed back to their schools.

Please remember that schools will be re-opening next week so we will soon see the children on their bikes and walking along the roadsides. Drive carefully.

Enjoy your week and send your news along to me.
