It’s a boy! That is the sign on the Vineyard Playhouse announcing the birth of Jack Harrison Crawford. Jack was born on Island last Thursday, weighing in at 7 lbs. 8 oz. He is the first baby born to Amy Cohn and David Crawford. Amy’s coworkers at the Vineyard Playhouse were delighted to make the announcement.
Kathy Rose has just returned from what she describes as “the most exciting experience of my life.” Kathy Rose is a photographer at Wooden Tent Photo. She is talking about a seven-day trip spent kayaking and camping in Prince William Sound, Alaska. She said Alaska was a little bit grubbier than expected, but the people were wonderful. They camped in the wild, having only two days of rain. She assures me that Alaska is truly wild, especially the scenery and the animals. Black bears visited their camp, and she declared the sea otters the best. Stellar sea lions, nearly 10-feet long, swam under their boats and came up on the other side. She saw puffins and even caught silver salmon, which they enjoyed for dinner one night.
There were six people plus two young guides, who knew everything and even did the cooking. One evening the owners dropped off eight pounds of fresh shrimp for the campers. There were lots of cranberries and blueberries, high bush and low bush, all ripe and tasty. She traveled with Anadyr Adventures. The group kayaked 68 miles and went to three glaciers. Kathy walked about two miles on Valdez glacier, enjoying the dramatically blue glacier pools. Meares glacier was calving, sounding she says like an aerial bombardment.
Kathy was breathless in describing her trip. She did say she could not have done it without the preparation that she got from Island health services. She said the cardio rehab at the hospital helped her to prepare herself. She also praised acupuncture by Sue Sanford for a sore shoulder. I can’t wait to see her photographs of this adventure.
