Welcome to the relative quiet of September! It's not quite like it used to be, when Main Street was virtually empty the day after Labor Day, but still, it's quieter. I always have very mixed emotions about September. I love the fall – the crisp cool air, big cozy sweaters, the clear nighttime skies, and the slower pace that life takes on. But, fall turns into winter, which for me does not spell joy, and the long hot days of summer are nothing but a memory. This year the mixed emotions are even stronger, with Riley starting kindergarten this week. Not only are we heading into a new season, this year, we're heading into a whole new phase of life. And though I know Riley will have a great time in school, like the change of seasons, I'll miss the phase we're leaving.
Thoughts and prayers this week go out to all of those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The effects of such a brutal storm are so far reaching that even our small Island way up here has felt them. We've got a number of new students enrolled in our schools and most everyone seems to have a story of family or friends who have suffered unimaginable loss as a result of the storm. So many people escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs and have to start over from scratch. While these people need summer clothes and such, the best way to contribute is still monetarily, so if you've been thinking of donating to the relief efforts and have not yet done so, please do.
I've heard through the grapevine that Sherm Burnham is considering giving up reading my column, as he is sick of reading about Mark Hess. So, if I could make a suggestion to Mr. Burnham, this would be an excellent time to stop.
Kelly Hess reported that her kids, Owen and Warner, spent two days up in Boston last week with their Aunt Liz, going to the Museum of Science and the IMAX Theater and whatnot. As a result, Kelly and her husband, whose name is being withheld out of respect for Mr. Burnham, had two days of relative freedom, a mini-vacation before the start of the school year.
The Dukes County Historical Society is looking for volunteers between now and Columbus Day weekend, particularly to help with visitor assistance. If you have some free time and would like to help, please call Betsey Mayhew at 508-627-4441.
Please keep in mind that schools are open as of this week. Please respect the speed limits posted in school zones and keep your eyes open for kids at bus stops, running for buses, or walking to school.
As it's been a quiet news week locally, I don't have much else to report. Be sure to share your back-to-school stories with me for next week.
Oh, and Sherm – Gotcha!
