Film: Expert looks at magic in the fields

September 8, 2005

If you have an interest in crop circles, or ley lines, or sacred geometry, or if you are merely curious, the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven, is the place to be this Friday evening. Freddy Silva, acclaimed for his scientific approach to these phenomena — as evidenced in his book "Secrets in the Fields" — will give a lecture and slide presentation. This is a very rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the true experts in these areas.

"Crop circle" has become the generic term for the unexplained, often geometric, images that appear in fields of growing cereal crops such as canola, wheat, or rye. The image is formed by vegetation that has been flattened in a pattern. Over the last 20 years these patterns have evolved. At first they were mostly circles and rings; now it is not unusual to see complex fractal patterns and symbolic imagery in the fields.

Though dismissed by many as a hoax, these formations have appeared in 29 countries including the United States, Mexico, and Russia. They were described hundreds of years ago, most famously in "A Natural History of Staffordshire" (1686) by Professor Robert P. Plot of Oxford University in England. England, of course is still one of the major centers of crop circle activity. When looking beneath the hoax hype, there is an abundance of scientific studies regarding changes in plant biology, magnetic energy, and the soils from within the formations. Certainly some crop circles are man-made, but the studies mentioned above provide objective standards for determining those that are spontaneous and those of human origin.

Some people, like Mr. Silva, find sacred meaning in the appearance of these expressive pictograms. Others are drawn to appreciate this mysterious phenomena purely by the beauty of the large-scale graphic forms, most of which are only fully visible from the air. The Milk Hill formation of 1997 was over 700 feet in diameter and comprised 409 discrete circles. It appeared overnight; some witnesses say crop circles are formed in 15 seconds.

Mr. Silva will bring together his extensive firsthand knowledge of crop circles and ancient scientific and mystic practices to prove his theory of "spiritual technology." He intends to demonstrate how crop circles are not only helping society rediscover hidden knowledge left behind by our ancestors, but how the circles are imprinting vital information into earth's living organisms.

Mr. Silva's book, "Secrets In The Fields," and his new DVD, "Stairways To Heaven," are the result of his new research into a kind of magic that can be accessed by anyone at these "temples" of the heart.

Slide show lecture, Friday, Sept. 9, 7:30 pm, Katharine Cornell Theatre, Spring Street, Vineyard Haven. Advance sale tickets, $10; at the door, $12. Book and DVD available for purchase. For more information, call 508-693-3210 or 508-696-1927 visit www.lovely.clara.net.
