Twilight usually finds me sitting on the steps of the back porch watching the birds come to the feeders for their last meal of the day. This minor change in the weather has also brought changes to the scene I now observe. The carpet of green ferns under the trees in the forest park is now showing areas of gold and rust as we wend our way towards fall. There seems to be in increase in the number of birds at the feeders perhaps because it is getting more difficult to glean their food supplies from the gardens. Even my pesky squirrel friends have returned and sit expectantly in front of me as if seeking reassurance that I will be supplying their peanut treats through the months to come.
As this scenery is changing so is the scenery about the Island as numerous people have left for their off-island homes and schools.
Young Mitchell Moreis left last week to start his freshman year at Columbia University in Manhattan. Accompanying him were his parents Sandra Macias and Rory Moreis and his sister Alexis. Mitchell is the grandson of Eunice Moreis and the late Peter Moreis, Sr. His mother is no stranger to that area of New York and Mitchell was born some 18 years ago at the hospital right across the street from the university.
The Loomis Chaffee Preparatory School in Windsor, Conn. was the destination of Jaime Young when she departed for the start of school. Jaime is the daughter of Eliza Usher and Maurice Young and the great-great-granddaughter of Sojourner Truth.
Kay Manning and Joe Nunes along with Kay's son, Rick, and Marnie Gauley recently attended the wedding of Kay's grandson Ryan Cobb and Kelley DeRiebeis. The wedding took place at St. Mary of the Nativity Church in Scituate. The parents of the couple are Frank and Joan DeRiebeis Sr. and Joan and Wayne Cobb of Bridgewater. Young Brendan Maseda, the son of James Maseda and the late Kathy Manning Maseda, was a groomsman and rumor has it that he was a hit both at the wedding ceremony and the reception where he proved to be quite the dancer.
Priscilla Sylvia's beautiful garden provided the background for Pam Melrose's birthday celebration last Thurs. More than forty women were in attendance, most of whom were dressed in frilly long dresses and hats of every description, as they gathered to extend their best wishes to the most popular librarian at the Oak Bluffs school who is fondly called "Mel" by her friends and even former students. Wonderful refreshments were served and those present spent most of their time laughing and reminiscing about "Pam stories." I could tell you a great deal more, but I promised I wouldn't.
Genevieve Rogers and her daughter Mary Ellen had as their guests last month Gen's daughter Susan and son-in- law Bud Absten from West Virginia. Susan and Bud brought along their son Todd's children, Shaun Michael and Ryan Todd. While here they had a chance to visit their son Chad Absten and his wife Chrissy and their two sons. Everyone is looking forward to their return visit next summer.
We send speedy recovery wishes to Henry Corey and also four-year-old Abbey Grace Marchand who broke her leg but is still buzzing along.
There will be a blood pressure clinic at the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging on Thurs., Sept. 22 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. Also mark your calendars for September 19 as there will be a Men's and Ladies' Potluck Lunch at 12 noon that day. An incorrect date of September 28 was previously listed on the schedule, but Rose wants you to know it is actually September 19. Anyone interested in attending, should contact Rose at the center at 693-4509 and let her know what you will be bringing.
Let us not forgot our neighbors in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. Check your newspapers for a list of those places you can send a donation to help out at this time.
We send Birthday Smiles on September 13 to Gary Jardin, and a special one to my daughter, Mary Alley, on the same date. And a belated smile to Valerie O'Donnell who celebrated on September 2.
Enjoy your week and let me know your news.
