West Tisbury

September 8, 2005

Hermine Hull - 508-693-2525 - hrmhull@gis.net

Although disappointed not to have received the predicted rain last week, who can complain about our weather? Sunny, dry, breezy days with cool nights. September has always been my favorite month on the Island, and I am grateful that it is here.

I have been, along with everyone else, preoccupied with national news this past week. The devastating hurricane Katrina, as well as the death on Saturday of Chief Justice Rehnquist, will have long-lasting effects on all of America. I saw in the Boston Globe that Gov. Romney has opened Camp Edwards at Otis Air Force Base to 2500 people who will be air lifted from the hurricane-stricken South. I can only hope that they will find some respite from their suffering, and the hope and fortitude to begin their lives anew in Massachusetts.

On the home front, West Tisbury has been busy with end-of-season parties and events. Both the Grange and the Ag Hall hosted special events this past weekend. The Farmers' Market seemed especially full of gorgeous produce and bouquets. I bought a beautiful bouquet of chartreuse green zinnias, my favorite, that never grow as tall or vigorous in my own garden, although I have tried. They seem to be thwarting me again as a painting, something not coming together quite the way I see it in my mind's eye. I set it up in my studio, the zinnias on my desk, a composition full of angles, chair and table legs and the spaces between them, a rectangle of the oriental carpet on the floor in the bottom corner of the painting. Composition is not usually my problem, but this one is a challenge.

Catherine and Al DeVito will be the proud parents and hosts for their son's wedding this Saturday, September 10, at their home off Lamberts Cove Road. Gregory DeVito will marry Lindsay Matranga of Mountain Lakes, N.J. Janet Holladay will conduct the ceremony. Greg was well-known around town, having worked for both Bart Humphreys and Mike Diaz at the old Humphreys/Vineyard Food Shop throughout his high school and college years. Best wishes and much happiness to you both.

Our Executive Secretary Jen Rand is also getting married this Saturday, to Ken Abbott, at Carol and Jerry Kenny's farm in Chilmark. Jen was feted last Friday evening, at a "bridle" shower in her honor, hosted by Carol Kenny, Mary Ann Brock, Leslie Baker, and Cindy Bonnell. The party, which was held at Misty Meadows, featured a cookout and a chocolate cake decorated with a horse drawn in frosting and the message, "Happy Trails, Jen." The big present was a gift certificate to Campbell and Douglas from the 20 friends attending. We all wish both of you a lovely life together.

Bill Ternes will be arriving Saturday afternoon to stay with us for the week. He will be teaching an outdoor painting workshop September 12 to 16.

In the interest of correctly reporting the facts, I must tell you that it was not "the unrepentant perp" (as I like to think of her) who called my friend, Brooks Robards, last week to report leaving her shoes that were taken from my car during our beach walk. A man responded to the note with Brooks' telephone number and called to say that his nieces had found the shoes in the grass at the top of the dunes. We had all assumed how they got there, but no one actually told Brooks that they had taken the shoes out of the car to wear on the hot sand. I apologize for misrepresenting the facts.
