Edgartown

September is here in full force! The weather has been quite chilly at night but beautiful during the day. It's funny though. No matter how warm it is, I seem to have lost the drive to get to the beach. I think it's because the kids still want to be in the water for such a long time and I get cold way before they do. And since we've all been suffering from ghastly colds, swimming just doesn't seem like a wise option these days. So, for us, the last beach day of the year may have already come and gone. But, hopefully we'll get a few more this week.

The first day of school last week was an exciting time. It was great to see all the kids with big smiles on their faces. I'm wondering how many of those faces will still be bearing a smile a month from now! Riley entered kindergarten this year. I knew the first day would go smoothly when I found him dancing around the house that morning singing "I'm going to kindergarten. I'm going to kindergarten." So far, we've been dropping him off and picking him up, not yet willing to release him to a school bus. However, he desperately wants to ride the bus home so that will come tomorrow. Why is kindergarten always harder on the parents than it is on the kids?

The Edgartown School staff was busy last Thursday morning greeting all the parents and kids heading into school. Retiring Principal Ed Jerome was there, standing alongside the interim principal, Paul Dulac. Mr. Dulac seems like a great addition to the school for this year. He is very personable and outgoing and from what I've witnessed, willing to work hard. Welcome Mr. Dulac! I chuckle at the symmetry in the world sometimes. I was in eighth grade for Mr. Jerome's first year as principal and now he is finishing his tenure during Riley's first year. From that tidbit of information, one can discern that either I am very young or Mr. Jerome has been with us a long time.

In light of Hurricane Katrina, the Edgartown School has offered to be the community center to help coordinate the town's efforts to help the people of the Gulf Coast and there are a number of activities planned in the weeks ahead. Starting this week, students have begun collecting money in their classrooms and in the foyer and contributions will go to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the ASPCA, and Habitat Operation Home Delivery. It's wonderful to see kids making a difference. It gives me faith.

Be sure to get me news of any upcoming events that you may have planned for Hurricane Relief so that we can get the word out!

Happy anniversary to Chris and Liza Dolby, who celebrated four years together on September 14.

Word is beginning to dribble in about Islanders who have gone off to college. Jonathan Ryan has settled in well at Emerson and has already taken part in one performance. Lucas Brewer has been playing soccer for Dean College and the team won their first game last week. Congratulations to both freshmen.

I wish I had more to report but, alas, with all the chaos of the week, people have been out of touch, I think. So — be sure to get me some news next week so I don't have to make stuff up!

Have a great week.
