Today you are invited to the ice cream social from 3 to 5 pm at the Edgartown National Bank. The party is to celebrate 100 years of banking on the Island.

It won't be easy to decide what you are going to do tomorrow night. First, of course, you can get lobster rolls. Then Douglas Parker will be at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore at 7:30 pm talking about his new book on Ogden Nash. Or you can enjoy our selectman Tristan Israel in a live performance with Paul Thurlow, Corinne de Langavant, and Rico Holley at the Katharine Cornell Theatre at 8 pm.

There is a Ceremony of Remembrance at the Children's Memorial at the Edgartown Lighthouse on Saturday at 12:30 pm. Hosted by the Historical Society, all are welcome to visit this beautiful place in memory of children who have died too young.

The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library are looking for new members. They raise money to improve our library. Some of them volunteer in the library as well. They also sponsor the Sunday afternoon speakers in the winter months. You are invited to join with the Friends at their annual meeting on Monday, September 26, in the downstairs room of the library. Meet the officers and learn more about the programs.

The Martha's Vineyard Garden Club recognized the beautification efforts of businesses all over town, not just on Main Street. The Garden Club wanted to acknowledge any business that beautified their property, whether keeping up an attractive area with flowers or simply putting out a pot of pretty flowers. From Ralph Packer's plantings near Mone Insurance and up State Road to the blooms at Crane's Appliances, the Garden Club handed out awards. Look for the little green decals that will mark each business. A total of 72 decals were given out this year.

Wherever you go, the conversation quickly turns to the tragedy of the destruction of New Orleans. The determination to help shown by Hans Buder and his friends should make all of us very proud. We hear many more encouraging stories each day. St. Augustine's is collecting clothing for those who lost everything. Camp Edwards was asking for donations of books and toys for the people being housed there temporarily. The Red Cross continues to accept donations of money as well as clothing.

Worshipers are invited to a mission of the Order of St. Luke at Grace Episcopal Church to be held on the weekend of September 23 through 25. They will hear from a healing minister, the North American Warden, the Venerable Larry Mitchell, who comes from Saskatoon, Canada, to speak on Healing, the Gospel, and Modern Medicine. A talk on the Healing of Addictions through Liturgy will be presented by the Rev. Dr. Mary Jane O'Conner-Ropp, Susan Kelly, and Les Holcomb. For more information, call the Registrar, Barbara Harnen, at 508-693-9788.

We are enjoying a visit from our daughter Laurel Mayhew who now lives in Mead, Colorado. That is just far enough that we don't get to see her nearly as often as we would like. She will be here to celebrate her father's birthday on Friday.

Happy anniversary to Doris and Jerome Clark on Saturday.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Kevin Olson. Tomorrow is a special day for Stephen Hammond and Donald Mayhew. Saturday belongs to Samantha Valley. Hilda Illingsworth celebrates on Sunday. Wish the best on Monday to Barbara Maciel. Jan Dorchester parties on Tuesday, enjoying better health after a rough summer. Happy birthday to Trip Barnes and Ken Ward on Wednesday.

Heard on Main Street:" If you think you can or can't, you are right."
