Seaman Apprentice Dustin Shaw of Oak Bluffs graduated from the United States Coast Guard Basic Training Center in Cape May, N.J., on July 29. While in training he was assigned to Lima Company as squad leader, guidon bearer, and captain of the color guard.
Attending the graduation ceremony were his mother, Marcia A. Valentzas of Oak Bluffs; Sarah Monast of West Tisbury; private first class Steven Maynard of Duxbury; and Dustin's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mikowski of Oak Ridge, N.J. Dustin currently attends Norwich University in Vermont and is stationed at the Integrated Support Command in Boston.
The Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce Charitable Fund announces the 2005 Jim Lambert Memorial Scholarship Fund winners.
Heather Ewing, Nina Ferry, Caroline Mayhew, Andrew Nelson, Sarah Paulson, and Anya Toteanu each received a $1,250 award.
The National Association of School Psychologists announces that it has awarded Lorraine Wells, a school psychologist with the Martha's Vineyard Schools, the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential.
The NCSP status is attained through an approved program of graduate work, internship, experience, and the NCSP examination. It recognizes an exceptional degree of training and experience, and signifies a commitment to the highest levels of professionalism, ethics, and service. Ms. Wells works with students from ages 3-22 in all of the schools of the Martha's Vineyard Public School system.
