The beautiful September days continue on the Island, in spite of lurking storms to the south. The four inches of rain last week washed the dust off the leaves, and there are patches of green grass making their way through the brown-bone white lawn. We may have to start mowing the lawn again.

Chandra Coleman, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Coleman of the South Road, was married last Saturday to Jeffrey Mark Ross at a ceremony in the West Tisbury Congregational Church. A reception followed at the Inn at Blueberry Hill. Kristina Kreyling Woodburn, a cousin of the bride, was matron of honor; Jay Mandel was best man. Alea Newman was the flower girl, and Aleck and Clay Hurst, cousins of the bride, were ring bearers. The newlyweds will be married again in Miami next week by a rabbi. After a wedding trip, they will live in Miami. We wish them long life and happiness.

Welcome back to school principal Diane Gandy, who is delighted to be back and "happy to have everyone in the same building this year." The school will hold an open house today, Sept. 22 from 6 to 7 for the whole community. Next week, on Sept. 28 there will be a meeting for parents only to discuss curricula. Welcome too to new teachers. Deborah Dunn is the new reading teacher; Victoria Dryfoos is the new Spanish teacher; and the new teacher's assistant for the 2/3 class is Gwen Wharton. Ms. Gandy is looking for a one-day-a-week general music teacher for singing and movement.

There are 49 students in the school, as of Sept. 15 with two more expected, one from Russia, the other from London, England. There are ten students enrolled in the pre-school, which is at the school but separate from it. Chris Abrams is the director.

It sounds as though everyone is set for a productive new school year.

The walking women finished their summer season and will proceed into the fall with a new leader, Judy Maynes, whose telephone number is 508-645-3460. All women are invited to join the group, which meets Thursday mornings at 9 am. Walks last about an hour and a half and it's a good idea to bring water or juice and to wear long pants and socks as protection against ticks. Next Thursday, Sept.29, the group will attack Great Rock Bight on North Road, near Tabor House Road. Call Judy for more details.

Elizabeth Germain, writer-chef, will focus on the benefits of pressure cooking at the next evening library program, Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 6:30. She will demonstrate how to make a squash risotto. There is no admission charge. The programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

There was a wonderful photo of Mildred Mayhew and Louis Larsen taken by Ron Hall in the current issue of Martha's Vineyard magazine. (Mr. Larsen named Mrs. Mayhew his favorite teacher.)

Remember the special town meeting next Monday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 pm at the community center.
