Dance: Dance premieres at the Yard

September 22, 2005

Two resident companies, Digby Dance, and Guta Hedewig Dance, this weekend will premiere new works created at the Yard. Both companies developed these new works as part of the dance colony's Company Residency Program in Chilmark.

"Both artists have taken advantage of their time at the Yard to push themselves in new directions," said Lois Welk, artistic director. "The Yard's residency programs provide crucial support for the development of new choreography. Sharing the work with an audience completes the experiential loop that is at the heart of live performance."

Kate Digby began Digby Dance in 2000 and now is the artistic director. She has received choreographic fellowships at Summer Stages Dance in 2003 and 2005, and was a finalist in the Massachusetts Cultural Council's 2004 Choreography Awards. Her choreography has been performed throughout the northeast and in Ecuador.

Guta Hedewig has had her work presented at festivals in her native Germany as well as in Holland and Spain. She was a resident choreographer at Glenwood Springs Dance Festival and her work has been in many New York City venues.

The Yard was founded by Patricia N. Nanon in 1973 and supports the creation of new work by providing the choreographers and dancers with housing, stipends, studios, artistic mentoring, technical support allowing the artists time to concentrate on their work. Residencies are open to national and international applicants. The Yard also provides in-school programs, community classes, and other special events throughout the year.

Company Residency Premieres, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Sept. 22-24, 8:30 pm, The Yard, off Middle Road, Chilmark. Pre-concert talk by Lois Welk, 8 pm. Tickets $15 or $12 for seniors and students. For more information call 508-645-9662.
