Wow! Today, Sunday, was a glorious bonus day! I had all but given up on more time at the beach. But today was so incredible, how could I resist? In truth, I should probably thank my kids for it. If they had been even somewhat well behaved, I would have stayed around the house and yard getting things done. Instead, the kids were fighting, screaming, crying, complaining and so on and I had to take them somewhere just to survive the day. The beach venture turned the day around for us. How lucky can you get?
Marilyn Scheerbaum reports that a small group of Islanders are sending health kits to the United Methodist Council On Relief. Thanks to the generous contributions of Cronig's, Stop and Shop, Dr. Schaeffer, Dr. Nadelstein, the floral staff at Donarama's, the staff at Dukes County Savings Bank, Our Market, Ann Floyd from Sandcastle Realty, and others, more than 70 packets have been sent off to Louisiana, with 20 more almost ready to go. The UMCOR packages are very specific and the group is in need of barber combs and hand towels to complete these next 20 units. Their goal is to send 200 packets and they are just about half way there. If anyone would like to help, you drop of some of these items to Marilyn at 71 School Street or she would also be willing to pick them up from you. These kits contain simple but necessary items that we all take for granted but would be hard pressed to be without.
The Silver Film Society is showing a German/American film on Friday Sept. 23 to raise funds for the American Red Cross's Katrina relief efforts. 7:30 pm at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, Vineyard Haven.
Happy birthday to Megan Donovan, who turned six on Sept. 17.
Congratulations to our friend, Michael "Cookie" Klimek! Riley and I wondered down to Katama Airfield on Sept. 13, where Mike works, and we were lucky enough to witness his first solo flight. Although we didn't realize it while we watched his first landing, fellow pilot and instructor Paul Santopietro told us what was going on. We witnessed a couple more approaches and landings and congratulated him on his achievement when his feet finally hit the ground. The event was memorialized on film with Airfield Manager Michael Creato taking pictures, as Paul cut Mike's shirttails, thus cutting his ties to the ground. Mike was clearly exhilarated by the experience and we are very glad that we got to share it with him. Fly safe, Cookie.
While it is very important to support the local events coming up to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, don't forget the regular Island charities that continue to need help. There was an article in the Cape Cod Times today about the Cape food pantries being low on supplies, while the Katrina collections are overflowing. I would imagine that the the Island Food Pantry and organizations also suffer from shortages at such times, so let's all try to keep them in mind as well.
That's all for now. Have a great week and get me your news!
