It seems to me I can remember a time in the distant past when the passing of Labor Day and the entering into fall meant cooler weather and a slowing down of activities. After reading the messages that came to me this week for the column, I guess those days have gone forever. You have many choices of activities to participate in within the next couple of weeks.

Trinity United Methodist Church Women are holding their annual rummage sale on Sat., Sept. 24. The sale will be held in the Parish Hall in the Campground from 9 am until 2 pm. If you have any donations you may bring them on Friday between 9 am and 1 pm. There will be many categories of "treasures" to purchase and for more info you may call June Lakso at 508-693-3506.

The kids' fishing derby, which was postponed from last Saturday because of storm predictions, has been rescheduled to this Saturday, Sept. 24, at the SSA Wharf in Oak Bluffs at 6 am.

Marguerite Cogliano, a junior at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, participated for the third year in the Jimmy Fund Walk in Boston last Sunday. Marguerite walks with "Team Cogliano" which was formed in memory of her grandfather. Participating along with Marguerite are her aunts and cousins. It is not too late to make a donation to her team. You may call her at 508-693-4724 and she will direct you to her web site.

Sunday, Oct. 2, is the date for the annual walk to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer's Disease. The four-mile walk starts at 12 noon at the Tisbury Senior Center and goes to the Oak Bluffs Senior Center.

You may register at the Tisbury Senior Center (508-696-4205). There will be prizes awarded for the most money raised. If you call the Alzheimer's Services Hot Line (508 775-5656) you can receive information about workshops, respite care grants and support groups.

The Oak Bluffs School PTO is looking for parents who might be interested in running for the School Advisory Council (SAC). There is one parent position open for this school year. Any parents interested in running for SAC should submit their name to the school office as soon as possible.

VTA student bus passes are available in the office at the Oak Bluffs School. The School Year Pass is good for the school year only and the cost for this pass is $10.

The Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard, for the third year, is once again distributing dictionaries to each third grade student on Martha's Vineyard. Last Friday, the club made a formal presentation to the third grade class at the Oak Bluffs School during the school's weekly Community Meeting.

Elizabeth Hartford, a junior at St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt., is enrolled in the London Theatre Program of Sarah Lawrence College and the British American Drama Academy for the fall semester. Elizabeth will study Shakespeare, comedy and drama, as well as learn performance techniques in voice, movement and stage lighting. All will culminate in the production of a play staged in a London Theatre. Lizzy will be visited by older sister Emily, also an aspiring actor, who lives and works in New York City. Both girls are the daughters of Renee Hartford and granddaughters of Estelle Suprenant.

The Oak Bluffs Senior Center is buzzing as usual with enthusiastic Rose Cogliano working on many possibilities of off-Island trips this winter. Rose asks for ideas for trips that people might be interested in. The trip to Foxwoods is scheduled for Sept. 26.

I send special speedy recovery wishes to my high school classmate Eddie Drew. Ed is hospitalized in Boston and here is his address so his many friends may send cards to cheer him along. The address is Brigham and Women's Hospital, Floor 7D, Room 78, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115.

We send birthday smiles to our neighbor Dennis Rose on Sept. 26 and Ray Dahill on Sept. 28.

Enjoy your week and send your news along.
