Irving H. Shriber
Irving H. Shriber, known to his friends as "Bud," was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 4, 1919. His parents were Jonah and Julia Shriber. Bud died Sept. 21 after a two-week battle with pneumonia and complications from a recent onset of diabetes. His wife and daughter were at his bedside. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara; daughter Nancee Shriber and granddaughter Julia Milner of New York City; son, Joshua Shriber and grandchildren Anastasia, Chloe, and Mason of Kansas City; sister Antoinette Powell of Dayton, Ohio; and nieces Judy Renz and Sandy Northey also of Ohio.
Bud served in World War II as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. His B-24 plane was shot down over the outskirts of Budapest on April 13, 1944. He was taken prisoner and spent the next year as a prisoner of war in Germany.
Bud and his wife Barbara left Kansas City, retiring to the Vineyard in 1996. Here Bud became an active member of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Edgartown. He also took great joy in his participation with The Community Solar Greenhouse of Martha's Vineyard (COMSOG). Bud was known for his humor. One was always assured of a good laugh when encountering him. He was a man of simple pleasures; he loved his ice cream. He would collect an amazing selection in the freezer, thus being prepared for serving dessert for 50 at all times. He loved his yearly trips to New Mexico to the family pecan ranch where he would harvest, sort, crack, and clean the pecans, often roasting them for all visitors. He loved tinkering in his workshop. Bud could fix just about anything, and did so for all of us.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Edgartown on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 3 pm.
The family requests no flowers be sent. Instead, it is suggested that donations be sent to the American Lung Association of Massachusetts, 5 Mountain Rd., Burlington, MA 01803.
Barbara Ivacek
She dances on the wind
Swirling above, below
Around each of us
Her strength infuses
all she has touched
Her farsightedness leads us
From our own darkness
Into the Light
We feel your passing Night Horse
We know your strength
Now, at last, you are among
The very orbs you knew only
From a distance
Godspeed and may all the
Celestial beings come to greet you
For you are now
among your peers
Goddess, Earth Mother, dear friend
Wendy Brophy wrote this poem to honor her friend, Barbara Ivacek, who died on August 23. A memorial service and celebration of Barbara's life will be held at 1 pm this Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. Friends will be invited to speak about Barbara and their memories of her. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Barbara's request that people work to heal the planet environmentally and politically, the family suggests that contributions be made to moveon.org or any chosen environmental organization.
