In Print: James Norton's book featured

October 6, 2005

The Bunch of Grapes Bookstore has set aside Friday evening, Oct. 14 in its Author Talks series, to celebrate the publication of the seventh edition of James H. K. (Jim) Norton's Global Studies Series: "India and South Asia," published this year by McGraw-Hill. A reception will be held at the Tisbury Senior Center on Pine Tree Tree Road in Vineyard Haven from 5:30 pm to 8 pm.

Jim Norton, a retired college teacher, Island farmer, and local historian, will give a brief presentation on why he first went to India in 1957 to pursue a Ph.D., at the University of Madras, what he has learned from and about that unique, and still little-known, part of the world, and how that is reflected in his book. According to Mr. Norton, South Asia provides vital examples of the evolution of democracy in our world today, including the challenges of poverty, disease, natural disasters, refugees, terrorism, and religious nationalism that we all share, especially in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the Gulf Coast this August, and the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean last December.

This event is open to the public; all are invited to come to the Tisbury Senior Center on Friday evening, Oct. 14, to join with Jim in an introduction to and celebration of his book. Refreshments will be served.

This Bunch of Grapes event will be followed by a five-week discussion of "India and South Asia," (seventh edition), led by Mr. Norton at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. Discussions will take place Thursday evenings, Oct. 20 through Nov. 17, all at 6:30 pm, as part of the library's Book Study Program. All are also welcome to join in this series to look in more detail at the contents of this important description of a vital part of our increasingly converging world.

For more information about the Oct.14 event, call Ann Bassett at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore, 508-693-2291; and about the Book Study Series, call Betty Burton at the Vineyard Haven Library, 508-696-4211, ext. 16
