The
Friends of the Library outdid themselves and provided tables laden
with homemade brownies, cookies, cakes, and, for the sensitive,
crudités, for the librarys annual holiday party last
Wednesday. Al Hurwitzs paintings were a wonderful backdrop
for the festivities.
Amidst the holiday celebrations, the town mourns the loss of one
of its most beloved community members, Bea Atkinson. A memorial
service was held on Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard
Haven. Donations in her name may be made to the church, P.O. 1197,
Vineyard Haven, 02568.
The December issue of The Chilmark Times, the newspaper put out
by the fourth and fifth graders, is, as usual, a lively, newsy production
with reports on events like the Turkey Trot. The traditional Thanksgiving
event is notable for the number of alumni who return to school to
help and to participate.
The variety of word games is impressive and sure to instill a lifelong
interest in words and their uses. As a chronic quitter of cigarette
smoking, I know exactly what Cold Turkey, Katy Smiths
idiom of the month, means, and it was a surprise that,
as Katy put it, Wow nobody got it right. Ian
Bardwells interview of The Times guiding hand Becky
Barca-Tinus was an informative look behind the scenes.
A goodly assemblage of Times staffers, freelancers and lots of friends
turned out for the holiday party given by Times owners Peter and
Barbara Oberfest and Doug and Molly Cabral last Friday at the Oberfests
Chilmark house. Everyone is still talking about the elegant feast,
from the sizzling shrimp hors doeuvres to the chocolate cake
finale.
Among the guests were Dr. and Mrs. Russell Hoxsie. Dr. Hoxsie was
scheduled to have a book signing last night at the Bunch of Grapes
for his Lets Walk, Lilly, a collection of his
essays on Island walks published by The Times. Former Times Calendar
editor Perry Garfinkel, who is working on a story for The National
Geographic and a book on Buddhism, was also there with his beautiful
companion, Anh Thuy Nguyen, a French citizen. And so was proofreader
and copy editor Kim Heath and her husband, David Thompson, with
their daughter Zephy, and brand-new West Tisbury columnist Hermine
Hull.
School closed yesterday for the holidays and will resume on Jan.
3, 2005.
Its time to wish all December celebrants a happy birthday.
Here they are: Lia Kahler, Dec. 5; Katy Upson, Dec.14; Warren Hollinshead,
Dec. 18; Jane Dietterich, Dec. 7; Helen Jackson, Dec. 19; Belle
Clarke, Dec. 21; Jeanette Johnson, Dec. 28, and Dick Brown, Dec.
31.
The Brazilian Assembly of God congregation, which worships at the
Christ United Methodist Church, has invited Chilmark churchgoers
to celebrate New Years Eve with them at the church, starting
with dinner at 10 pm.
Merry Christmas!
