Congratulations
to Gene and Jacqueline Baer as they celebrate their Golden Wedding
anniversary. Fifty happy years ago today they were married at the
First Baptist Church [see photo in todays Times]. Jackie's parents,
the late Stan and Phyllis Lair, and Gene's mother Kay Baer, who is
now 101, were there. Gene's brother John, now of Annapolis, Md., was
the best man. His sister Rosemary was the maid of honor. Kay Baer
now lives with her daughter Rosemary in Tenafly, New Jersey. Janet
Frieh Cunningham of Vineyard Haven, Jackie's friend from early childhood,
also attended the wedding.
Jackie and Gene's family will celebrate the anniversary on-Island
during Christmas. Justin and Jean Baer, from Silver Spring, Maryland,
and their three children will join Chris and Janice Baer from Oak
Bluffs to celebrate the event. Gene and Jackies son Jon and
daughter Gretchen live in Bisbee, Arizona. They will celebrate the
anniversary on the Island at a later date.
Congratulations to the businesses who have brightened our town with
fun and creativity. First place for the very best holiday decorations
this year on State Road goes to Shirleys Hardware, and Hello
takes the prize on Main Street. Second place winners are LeRoux at
Home and Morrice Florist. The winners were selected by judges for
the Tisbury Business Association, whose members help make our community
a better place in which to live.
Island shoppers know the shopping bag to have this year is the one
from The Green Room. It is a striking design and always catches the
eye. Elaine Barses store is laid out well, drawing both young
and old for sports wear and gear. She also has warm jackets which
are suddenly popular this week.
You can see anything in our town. A few days ago I stopped for a man
of middle age, neither young nor old, to cross in the crosswalk. He
held a long stick in front of him. At the end of it, quacking and
flapping its wings, was a toy yellow duck. He walked it across the
road and up the sidewalk on the other side of the street. People watched,
but nothing was said. A touch of whimsy brightened our day.
To enjoy over a dozen Last Night events, you can buy a Last Night/First
Day button from the Tisbury Ambulance Association. There will be a
special showing of Mary Poppins on New Years Eve
at 1:30 pm at the Cornell Theater. Doors open at 1 pm. This film will
be free with Last Night/First Day buttons, $5 on site. As you probably
remember, this rollicking Disney musical features Julie Andrews and
Dick Van Dyke. Come prepared to sing along.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Peter VanTassel,
Toby Riseborough, and Denise Dorsey next Wednesday.
Heard on Main Street: Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good
night. |
