I was driving around the other day, through the various towns, running errands and I was struck by the never-ending beauty on this island. Driving from Vineyard Haven to Oak Bluffs via the Beach Road was breathtaking. The water on both sides of the road was like glass, everything was a steely blue gray color, and there were boats and birds traveling about. It was truly amazing, particularly in the middle of winter when many of us may question why we live on Martha's Vineyard. I then headed down to Edgartown from Oak Bluffs and again had my breath taken away by the stunning view along State Beach. As I was driving over the big bridge, there was a small boat at the end of the jetty and the scene was so tranquil and serene. I suspect that we should all drive around the Island admiring the peace and beauty a bit more often.
There's lots of excitement at the Gundersen home these days. Baby Ingrid, daughter of Kevin and Pia, turned one on Jan 5, while big brother, Eli turns three on Jan. 16. And if that isn't enough, the Tooth Fairy is expected to arrive tonight for the very first time, as Jacob, the oldest of the clan, lost his first tooth today. As Jacob has harbored some uncertainty about losing said tooth, which has been loose for a while, he has been very careful about what he has been eating. Well, wouldn't you know that the tooth actually fell out while he was eating a bowl of Jell-O, of all things. Congratulations one and all.
Happy birthday wishes also go out to Matt Morris, who turned 5 on Jan. 4, and to Kevin Ryan, who celebrated on Jan. 7.
Kelly Geddis e-mailed me to update me on her dad, Jim Geddis. Jim, who is battling lung cancer, was recently released from the ICU ward in S. Carolina. While he is still in the hospital, he is getting a little stronger and they hope to get him home to Kelly's house soon. If you would like to send him a card or note, you can send it to him in care of Kelly Hundley at 1689 Chamberland Court, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Kelly also wanted to thank everyone who has said a prayer for her Dad.
Melissa Hammond recently held a used coat drive at the Edgartown School to help people in need this winter. If you are in need of a gently used warm coat, they will be available, at no cost, at Martha's Vineyard Community Services on Jan. 14 between 10 am and 3 pm.
Be sure to tune your televisions in to CBS at 11 am on Jan. 18 to see Ev McSweeney on The Price is Right! Ev recently went out to visit her granddaughter, rapidly rising movie starlet, Nichole Hiltz, and while there, was a contestant on the game show. She also had the pleasure of joining Nichole at a red carpet premier of Woody Allen's new latest movie. Word has it that Ev was dressed to the nines for the celebration and had a wonderful time.
This is officially the beginning of vacation season for Islanders and I've heard several people talking about upcoming trips. Disney seems to be a very popular destination this year, but I'm sure many of you are heading to other luxurious locales for a week or two over the next few months. Be sure to share your travel adventures with me for the column!
Have a great week, everyone. Be sure to get me your news.
