The Cattle Drivers

New band in town
Kevin Keady and a group of musical friends have formed a new band, The Cattle Drivers, thanks to an invitation Kevin got from Wharf Pub owner Will Coogan to perform there last November. Kevin was joined by Don Groover on banjo and Buck Shank playing mandolin. The lively trio delighted the audience and was asked back on a regular basis. Now, with the addition of Mike and Becky Tinus on upright bass and violin, the new five-piece band has gained a name and an enthusiastic following.

The Cattle Drivers draw mainly from Kevin's repertoire of quirky original songs and other tunes from American folk and country and western traditions. Hear the band every Friday night at the Wharf Pub beginning at 8:30 pm.

Margery Benjamin's musical poetry
Hear Margery Benjamin, a former West Tisbury resident, read from her recently published poetry collection, "Song Spinner," at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore this Friday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 pm.

Poet Brooks Robards gave the volume a glowing review in the The Times on Jan. 12, citing Ms. Benjamin's "musical language," and calling the book "a collection of poems that is generally varied, rich, accomplished, and wise." For information, call 508-693-2291.

Sock hop benefits anyone and everyone
If you've ever planned an event to raise money for your organization, you know how much work is involved. On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Edgartown Yacht Club is doing all the work for you. All you have to do is show up, dance, have a good time, and the money from your ticket will go to whichever Island charity you designate.

The Oldies Sock Hop will feature DJ Paul Donnelly, a costume contest, prizes and fun. Your $25 ticket can be paid for with a check made out to the charity of your choice.

Caroline Taylor, yacht club committee member, said, "We couldn't decide who to raise the funds for. There are so many good organizations." The committee decided not to decide, but rather to leave the choice up to each guest.

Island organizations should jump at this opportunity for a fun and easy way to raise money. Call up your friends and make plans to meet at the hop

Oldies Sock Hop, Saturday, Feb. 11, 8 pm to 12:30 am, Edgartown Yacht Club, 1 Dock Street. Tickets $25 to benefit the charity of your choice. For information, call 508-627-4361 or 508-627-9404.
