Fourth graders take to the stage

By Anna Marie D'Addarie - February 16, 2006

"Come to our play. See how hard we worked," said Colby Weron, a fourth-grader at the West Tisbury School. Colby and his fellow production team members, Sam Permar and Lucy Norris paid a visit to The Times office on Feb. 14 to make sure their upcoming play gets some press.

This Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3 pm and 7 pm the Fourth Grade Theater Project will present three original plays by the students from the West Tisbury and Chilmark schools. This week marks the end of a ten-week program led by playhouse artistic director MJ Bruder Munafo. The project is part of the curriculum and the students invent all the characters, settings, and plots for the plays which are then scripted by Ms. Munafo and Georgia Morris.

The Fourth Grade Theater Project is supported by a challenge grant from the Farm Neck Foundation and also by the Martha's Vineyard Cooperative Bank.

On Saturday the plays will be "Colonel Tinkle's Wrong Turn," by Jon Harris's class and "What's That Teeny Red Planet?" by Mary Boyd's class, both from the West Tisbury School. Also on the bill will be "On the Right Side of the Plate," by Jackie Guzalak's class at the Chilmark School.

Take Colby's advice and check out these plays and meet the students who worked so hard to bring these plays to life.
