Swing into spring

By Anna Marie D'Addarie - March 23, 2006

Swing is back, big time. In association with The Yard, the Friends of the Chilmark Public Library are hosting a swing dance and workshop this Saturday, March 25.

Lindy Hop champions Linda and Chester Freeman will teach the workshop, called "Swing on Martha's Vineyard." Learn from the best as these two medalists from the Big Apple Lindy Hoppers teach you to swing. The dance workshop is on Saturday, March 25 from 1 to 4 pm at the Chilmark Community Center on South Road. No partner is needed for the workshop and you don't need any dance experience either. The cost for the workshop is only $20 or $5 for teens. After the three-hour session you'll be all set for the big dance on Saturday night at the Yard on Middle Road in Chilmark.

The dance will include a lesson with Josh Gordon at 7:30 pm, with the party beginning at 8 pm. Dance to the best of recorded swing music and it's free!

Mr. Freeman is a member and assistant director of the Big Apple Lindy Hoppers performance troupe and winner of a silver medal at the Canadian Lindy Hop Championship. The Lindy Hop is the original swing dance done at the Savoy Ballroom in the 1920s.

"Our mission is to spread the joy of swing dancing as we teach people the skills to do it. We love teaching, each other, and our students... so we all always have a good time," said Mr. Freeman.

Hop into spring this Saturday and "Swing on Martha's Vineyard."
