Time to garden...

By Arlan Wise - May 4, 2006

Astrology has very specific rules for planting and harvesting based on the belief that every type of plant is ruled by a planet whose nature it shares. The moon's monthly travels give the timing. The rules are pretty easy to follow: moons in water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) or earth signs (Taurus, Capricorn) are fertile; moons in air (Gemini, Aquarius) and fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are barren. The exceptions are that Virgo, an earth sign, is barren, and Libra, an air sign, is productive for flowers. All you have to do is pay attention to the sign the moon is in when you want to garden.

When the moon increases in light, going from new to full, plants love to grow. It is the prime time to plant, especially annuals and vegetables which produce above ground. When it goes from full to new, plant biennials, perennials, bulbs, and plants that produce below the ground. Cultivate, weed, and cut the grass during the waning moon. When you see the moon looking like a D, the moon is waxing, or increasing. When the moon points towards the right, looking like a C, it is on the wane, decreasing in light.

Have fun in the garden during this fertile Taurus time.

Thursday, May 4 Moon in Leo. Break your routine, play hooky, and enjoy this lucky day. Take a risk, ask for what you want, and make it happen. Take the kids for a special treat. Your passion and enthusiasm may take you way over the top today and it's okay to boast a bit. Don't make any promises and enjoy the ride.

Friday, May 5 Moon in Leo. Mercury enters Taurus to turn your mind towards the reality around you. He will help you take your creativity out of your mind and put it into form. Show off your talents. Express your love to those you care for. Sometimes it's important to hear those words of affection.

Saturday, May 6 Moon VC Leo, enters Virgo at 8:20 am. This is the weekend to do your chores and your yard work and make preparations for the summer. Virgo is a barren moon so the seeds you plant will have a tough time. It's a do, fix, and correct things type of weekend. It's best to do more of the thinking and planning today, and take more action tomorrow.

Sunday, May 7 Moon in Virgo. This is a high-energy day and you need to be active. Do something out of the ordinary while you continue to correct, fix, and make plans. Do your recycling and get rid of clutter. If you have the time, help someone else. You can move certain issues to the next step. Don't ignore your spiritual practice.

Monday, May 8 Moon in Virgo, VC from 1:48 pm to 9:10 pm when it enters Libra. You need to start early and get the whole day's work done before the moon goes VC. You'll want to be immersed in work. Leave the little details and the cleaning up stuff to the afternoon. Use those VC afternoon hours for exercise.

Tuesday, May 9 Moon in Libra. Today is Venus's day. Let your aesthetic side lead your actions. Libra is the best sign for planting flowers, so put yours in today. It's a day to appreciate love and beauty. Have meals with friends, take your partner out somewhere special. You can find the fair solution to the current problem.

Wednesday, May 10 Moon in Libra. The sun and Neptune dialog over facts vs. ideals. It's time to think of which of your dreams and fantasies you can really accomplish. You can see through the romantic veneer into the reality of your relationship. Give a gift of a flowering plant to someone who needs a present.

Thursday, May 11 Moon VC Libra, enters Scorpio 8:25 am. This is a fertile moon, excellent for planting and transplanting all crops. The next three days are the prime planting days of this two-week period. Your mind is also fertile and full of intuitive knowledge. Plant mental seeds; send off that proposal or application. Write an outline for your next project.

Friday, May 12 Moon in Scorpio. Listen to your intuition about taking a risk, be it financial or emotional. You want to give your money and your heart the chance to expand. You can find the richness in deep emotional encounters if you look. You'll feel driven today to push your personal agenda. Make love in the moonlight.

Saturday, May 13 Moon VC Scorpio, enters Sagittarius 4:56 pm. Today's full moon is known as the Buddha moon and opens the way to attunement with the spirit. This is one of the more spiritual full moons. Honor the day with meditation and prayer. The VC energy gives you a door towards the other side. Make this a day of inner peace and contentment.

Sunday, May 14 Moon in Sagittarius. Chiron turns into retrograde motion. Because of the holiday, you will see your wounds about mother and mothering come to the surface. Take Mom out on an adventure. Push her beyond her limits and explore something new together. It's more fun than flowers.

Monday, May 15 Moon in Sagittarius, VC from 4:15 pm until it enters Capricorn at 10:59 pm. Be very clear when it is important that the words you say be correctly understood. Don't assume anything or believe what you hear without checking it out from another source. Get outdoors in the evening light and exercise, play your favorite sport, or take the dog for a long walk.

Tuesday, May 16 Moon in Capricorn. This is a solid day for working. You can set boundaries and define your work responsibilities. It will be easy to stay focused and get a lot done. Take a step towards furthering your career. It's the moon to plant root crops and peanuts and onions. Fertilize your soil.

Wednesday, May 17 Moon in Capricorn. If you feel like you are hitting a wall, stop pushing and try a gentler approach. It's another great workday with good opportunities for advancing your career. Work long and hard and you will see the results of your efforts later on. It's not a good night for emotional confrontations.

Thursday, May 18 Moon in Aquarius. Today is a day for thinking and thought. The sun and Mercury meet in earthy Taurus, planting a seed you will think about and act on for months to come. Think about how you can protect your investments and other assets. This is a barren moon and seeds planted now tend to rot.
